I highly recommend adding a trench coat to your wardrobe. They come in all shapes and sizes from short to long, fitted to oversized, and in an array of color options. A trench coat is one of the most versatile pieces I own, and I’m constantly throwing one over all my outfits from the shabbiest of sweats to a sweater and jeans, and even a date night look. There are SO many ways to style it. If you’re in the market for a trench coat, might I recommend the Sézane Clyde Trench Coat? It’s quite pricey but the quality is outstanding. It was first released about a year ago as part of a seasonal collection and the internet went nuts for it, selling it out within hours. Since then, the brand has restocked it several times and added more color options (eight in total!) For this review, I’m breaking it down for you with info on fit, sizing, quality, and overall opinions. I’ll also share a brief comparison with the Sézane Scott Trench if you are deciding between the two (and I’ll tell you my favorite as of the moment.)

Sézane Clyde Trench Coat Review

Note that I was gifted the Clyde Trench Coat from Sézane, but these are my honest opinions. I was actually planning on purchasing it for my spring wardrobe.

Material Composition
The Clyde Trench Coat shell is made from 100% organic cotton and the lining is made from recycled polyester and organic cotton (with similar compositions across all color ways.) The shell is a water repellant material if that is important to you, but here’s my personal opinion on that. I live in a wet and rainy climate, and although this trench coat is perfectly suitable for a drizzle, I do not recommend wearing it in a downpour (it will not keep you dry.) I will often wear it on a wet day, but I also always bring my umbrella. It doesn’t have a hood either so, in general, it’s not my first choice of outerwear for rainy weather.

One really special detail of the Clyde Trench is the patterned lining that just peeks out a bit as you sway and move. It gives it interest and sets it apart from other trench coats on the market. Each color has a different lining. The one I’m wearing is lined with a gorgeous leopard print (swoon!) You can even cuff your sleeves so the print shows at the wrists.

Fit & Sizing
Let’s talk a bit about the fit and sizing. One thing Sézane does so well is that each piece is so thoughtfully designed in terms of fit and quality. This trench coat in particular has an a-line shape which means it’s smaller at the top and flares out towards the bottom. This results in this beautiful drape that you don’t see in many trench coats. It just sits so well on the body in an effortless way that is easy and unfussy.

It has three buttons in the front, two pockets on the sides, and a collar. The back also has a vent which allows more movement and flow. Like with most blazers and jackets with a vent, you’ll need to cut the thread to release it. One thing to note is that this trench coat does not have a belt or belt holes for adding shape. I actually prefer it this way; it just makes the overall look more relaxed.
In terms of sizing, the Clyde Trench Coat is meant to fit oversized. The sizing guidance on the retail site recommends to size down if you’re in between sizes, but to otherwise take your usual size. Personally, I fall between a 0 and 2 in most of Sézane’s outerwear, and I ordered the size 0. At this smaller size, you can see, it still has that oversized fit that looks great. To sum it up, I would stick with the sizing guidance on the website. If you are short, know that the Clyde Trench is on the longer side. I’m 5’3″ and found the length to be perfect, but it’ll be longer on you shorter girlies.

The Clyde Trench Versus The Scott Trench
I did a full review of the Scott Trench Coat here, but I’ll give you a quick rundown of the differences between each of these trench coats Sézane offers.
- The Scott Trench has a more classic shape and fits slimmer throughout. I actually sized up to the 2 in the Scott Trench so it would have a more relaxed fit. It fits much smaller in the shoulder area as well.
- The Scott Trench has a more exaggerated collar and lapels while the Clyde Trench just has a regular collar.
- The Scott Trench has button tabs on the shoulders, a tie belt along the waist, a back slit with a button closure, and ties along the sleeves that can be tightened. While the Clyde Trench just has a back vent.
- The Scott Trench coat is shorter falling just below my knees (I’m 5’3″) while the Clyde Trench falls to my lower calves.

Which Trench Coat Do I Prefer?
This is kind of like choosing a favorite child, but right now, I actually prefer the Clyde Trench. It feels a bit more trendy because of it’s oversized shape, longer length, and easy silhouette. The Scott Trench feels a bit more classic. Although, I prefer the Clyde right now, I will always keep the Scott Trench because eventually, the current style may swing back more towards a classic shape, and it’ll be ready and waiting for me.
I highly recommend both styles and whichever one you are considering purchasing, know that both are such good quality. You won’t regret either purchase.
