If you’re going to buy your first item from Sézane, make it a piece of knitwear. Sézane knitwear is in a class all it’s own. Not only is it so well made and high quality, there is always special and thoughful design elements that give it an extra bit of feminity that Sézane is known for. One piece of Sézane knitwear that has been on my wishlist for a few years is the Emilie Cardigan. It is part of their main collection and comes in several different color options (deciding which color to purchase is the hardest part!) With winter fast approaching, it was time to add this chunky knit to my Sézane collection, and I’m so glad I did. In this post, I’m reviewing the Sézane Emilie cardigan in full, giving details on fabric and care, fit and sizing, and a few outfit ideas below.
Cardigan / Blouse / Jeans / Boots / Bag
For those of you who are new to the brand, Sézane is my favorite French clothing and accessories brand. They specialize in timeless, chic, and feminine Parisian style. Their pieces are moderately priced but the quality is amazing, truly. You can tell the minute you pull a piece out of the package. Because some of the pieces can be pricey, my strategy is to buy a few pieces each season to add to my wardrobe, knowing they will last me years and years. See the bottom of this post for more of my Sézane reviews.
***Note that I receive a credit on a regularly basis from Sézane, but I’ve purchased many (so many!) pieces with my own money. I truly love the brand.
Sézane Emilie Cardigan Review
Fabric & Care
The Emilie Cardigan is a chunky knit with a round neckline, balloon sleeves, and tone-on-tone buttons. It’s made from 55% alpaca, 15% wool, and 30% polyamide (a synthetic material.) The material is really soft, but if you’re sensitive to wool, know that it is a bit scratchy. I am fairly sensitive to natural fabrics so I plan to always wear this cardigan with a top layered underneath. A long sleeve scoop neck tee like this works perfectly.
This cardigan comes in several color options with new colors released every so often in their monthly collection drops. Right now, it’s available in light beige (what I own), camel, gray, pink, ecru, navy, black, and red with a few colors being sold out. Note that popular colors often get restocked so keep checking back if the color you want is sold out in your size.
If you’re considering a piece of Sézane knitwear, especially one made of wool or alpaca, it’s important to know that they are always hand wash only. My strategy when caring for my wool knitwear is to avoid washing as long as can, spot treating it with a gentle detergent when necessary. I also always remove my knitwear prior to cooking or preparing food to avoid stains.
Fit & Sizing
The Sézane Emilie Cardigan runs a bit large in my opinion. The Sézane website recommends staying true to size or sizing down if in between sizes, and I agree with that. I opted to size down to the XXS (I tend to fall between a XS and XXS in their knitwear.) At this size, it still has plenty of room for layering without being too oversized.
How To Style It
I have so many ways I plan to style this cardigan this winter and spring, but here are a few ideas.
Layered With A Button Down & Trousers
If you wear business casual, this cardigan is absolutely work-friendly. Try it worn unbuttoned with a button down underneath (tuck in the shirt) and paired with trousers and boots or loafers.
Paired With A Tee, Cropped Denim, & Sneakers
One way I would style this cardigan for the weekend is to pair it with a casual tee and my favorite slim sneakers (I love a Samba!) Add a few pieces of jewelry to round it out.
Buttoned Up & Tucked Into Wide Leg Pants
I love that this cardigan can be worn buttoned up and tucked in (either fully or with a French tuck) or worn unbuttoned. Try buttoning it up and wearing it with a pair of cropped wide leg pants and ballet flats.
Paired With A Feminine Blouse and High Waisted Jeans
This is the outfit I’ve styled for this post. I loved it so much I plan to wear it on Christmas Day. It’s wintery, feminine, and chic all at the same time. I paired it with heeled boots.
