Sweaters are a foundational piece of your wardrobe for winter, spring, and fall. If you’re curating a functional capsule style wardrobe, you’ll need a few sweaters in different styles and materials. In this post, I’m sharing my favorite sweaters for women to shop right now, plus a few tips to help you pick the best fit for your wardrobe. Let’s get into it.

Tips When Shopping For Sweaters
Consider The Fabric
If you can afford it, look for sweaters made from natural fibers like cotton or wool. Sweaters made from synthetic fibers like polyester or acrylic tend to lose their shape with wear.
If you’re sensitive to wool, try cashmere which is lighter and softer and less itchy. Merino wool is also softer than regular wool but a bit more coarse than cashmere.
Cotton sweaters are another option, but cotton is less insulating than wool which means they are best suited for warmer temperatures.

Think About Fit
Sweaters come in different shapes and sizes. You’ll want to have a variety of styles to maximize the versatility of your wardrobe.
Slim fitting sweaters are great for layering under blazers and jackets. These also work well for wearing over your shoulders because they aren’t too bulky.
Relaxed fit sweaters have a looser fit. They are cozy yet tailored and work well on their own or layered over tees, button down shirts, or turtlenecks. Relaxed fit sweaters are the most versatile as they can be worn to the office or just a casual day with the kids.
Oversized sweaters are very on trend and super cozy. Try sizing up to get an oversized fit. Wear these with jeans or leggings for a day you want to be casual and comfortable.
What Styles Are Best?
Sweaters come in tons of different styles from crewneck, v-neck, turtleneck, mockneck, cardigans, and more. I recommend having a variety for different occasions. Crewneck sweaters are great basics and easy to wear. Plus, you can layer them with button downs and turtlenecks for extra warmth. Turtleneck sweaters are a must if you live in a colder climate. That bit of extra fabric around the neckline will keep you warm and toasty. V-neck sweaters are also another option. I like how they show some skin along the neckline for a more feminine look.
Caring For Your Sweaters
My biggest tip is to avoid washing your sweaters as much as possible. Knits are very delicate and can breakdown with frequent washing. I recommend washing after five wears or so. Follow the instructions carefully and use a gentle detergent. I always remove my sweater when cooking or baking to prevent stains that require washing.
Sweaters tend to pill with wear especially under the arms. Purchase a fabric shaver to remove the pills and extend the life of your sweaters. To avoid pilling, be sure to purchase the best quality you can afford. Also remember to store your sweaters folded and not on a hanger.
Where To Shop For Sweaters
Everlane
Everlane is my go-to for basic sweaters. They are really well made and almost always have a great fit. Their merino wool and cashmere sweaters feel soft and luxurious and not itchy. They have so many options in different fabrics that suit your preferences. They also just released a bunch of cotton options for those of you are super sensitive to wool. I find Everlane sweaters to fit true to size.

Sézane
Sézane knitwear is beautiful, thoughtfully designed, and feminine. Each sweater has something special about it – an intricate cuff detail, the perfect drape, or a beautiful neckline. I have collected quite a few of their sweaters over the years, and I’m sharing my favorites below. These are wardrobe pieces you’ll have and love wearing for years and years. Note that the wool Sézane uses in their sweaters can be quite scratchy if you’re sensitive to it. If this is the case, select knitwear made with cashmere, merino wool, or cotton. Or you can plan to layer a long sleeved tee underneath. Sézane knitwear runs slightly large in my opinion; sizing guidance is provided on the retail site, and I find it to be fairly accurate.
I have reviewed almost all these sweaters in more detail on the blog:

Quince
If you’re on a budget, I highly recommend Quince. Their collection of basic knits is extensive and affordable. Quince is a great place to shop if you are building a capsule wardrobe and need quality basics. Their $50 cashmere sweaters are very reasonably priced, and I own quite a few of them. I layer them under blazers and throw them over my shoulders to wear as a scarf. I also love their cotton sweaters which are great for spring, summer, and fall.
