winter staples for cold weather, a cream colored cable knit sweater, tan wool coat, dark wash jeans, cream colored boots, and a red beanie

As the temperatures plummet and the winter chill sets in, you’ll need a few winter wardrobe essentials to keep you warm and protected. On those frigid days, having a well-rounded winter wardrobe can make all the difference. From warm layers to cozy accessories, these ten winter staples are a must-have for staying comfortable, stylish, and protected throughout the cold season.

Ten Winter Staples You Need For Cold Weather

1. Cashmere Sweaters

Soft, luxurious, and incredibly warm, a cashmere sweater will add elegance to your winter wardrobe. Fitted options are easy to layer with blazers and cardigans and feel soft against the skin. Stick to classic neutrals for versatility, or add a pop of color to brighten up dreary days. My favorite place to shop for sweaters are Quince, Everlane, and Sézane.

2. Leather Boots

The right boots for you will be highly dependent on where you live. A solid pair of insulated winter boots will protect your feet from snow and slush while keeping you stylish. Look for waterproof options with good tread for better grip and warmth. I’ve linked several styles that are functional yet chic below. Skip the skinny jeans and pair them with a straight leg jean for a more updated look. Be sure to size up at least a half size so you can wear them with thick socks.

3. Dark Wash Jeans

Dark wash jeans are a versatile wardrobe staple. They’re dressy enough for a night out but casual enough for everyday wear. The darker hue is great for winter, as it hides dirt and pairs easily with all types of outerwear. I’ve linked my favorite classic dark wash jeans below.

4. Thermal Tops & Leggings

Layering is key in winter, and thermal shirts and leggings are perfect for adding warmth without bulk. Thermal tops can be layered under sweaters, and thermal leggings are great for layering under jeans and pants. They add warmth without compromising your style and are perfect for those extra-chilly days. For milder climates, a simple long sleeve tee like this will work.

5. Cold Weather Accessories

Cold weather accessories like knit hats, wool scarfs, and thick socks are wardrobe essentials in the winter especially if you live in a cold climate. Cold hands can quickly ruin your winter day, so invest in a pair of lined gloves. If you’re looking to be cozy on your commute to work or are planning to spend any time outside (which you should!), these cold weather accessories are a must.

6. Wool or Lined Trousers

A tailored pair of wool trousers will keep you warm while looking sophisticated. Look for high-waisted options that can be tucked into boots or paired with blouses and sweaters for a polished look. Select a straight or wide-leg style for versatility. If you live in a milder climate, a lined pant will suffice.

7. Chunky Sweater

A chunky knit sweater is perfect for layering and offers a cozy, oversized silhouette. It can easily transition from casual daywear to more refined looks when paired with tailored pants or skirts.

8. Classic Wool Coat

A timeless wool coat, preferably in a neutral color like black, camel, or gray, can elevate any outfit. Look for one that’s long enough to keep you warm. Depending on your climate, you’ll want to check the wool content; invest in an option with more wool for colder temperatures.

9. Down or Puffer Coat

For extremely cold weather, a high-quality down or puffer jacket is a must. I recommend investing in a quality option if you live somewhere cold – it will make all the difference. I own this one from Everlane which keeps me warm and cozy on really cold days here in Seattle.

10. Turtlenecks

A turtleneck can be worn on it’s own on mild days or layered under sweaters, blazers, and button downs on colder days. The extra bit of fabric at the neckline does wonders for keeping you warm and toasty.
