Fall dressing is all about layers. The mornings tend to be chilly but warms by the afternoon. Having a collection of layers for this season is key for a functional wardrobe. In this post, I’m rounding up the best layers for fall. I’ve including everything from denim jackets to sweater coats to blazers. These are pieces you can use to create visually interesting outfits, but they also serve a very practical purpose of keeping you warm and cozy!
The Best Layers For Fall
The Sweater Coat

The sweater coat is the eptiome of warm and cozy. I have quite a few in my fall collection including this new one from Darling called the Summit Coat (code ASHLEYR for 15% off.) I also love this one from Mango which I own in green, this one from ABLE, and this one from Z Supply. These are perfect for layering over tees or tanks. I personally love the way a sweater coat looks with a silk cami or bodysuit layered underneath.

The Trench Coat

The trench coat is such a chic jacket option for fall. It comes in all sorts of styles these days, but I prefer one with a classic longer cut. This one from Sézane (pictured above) is so classic and timeless, but this oversized version is also on my fall wishlist. For a lighter option, I highly recommend this drapey one from Madewell which I included in my fall capsule wardrobe. If you’re looking for one with a hood, try this one from J.Crew, and for an affordable option, try this one from Gap.

The Denim Jacket

The denim jacket is a cool, casual layer that is perfect for weekends. I love this trendy chore jacket style pictured here or a more classic oversized denim jacket like this. You could also try one with a belt. I style mine often with jeans for a denim on denim outfit but you could layer it over a dress for an elevated look or pair with a hoodie and leggings for relaxed days with your kids.

The Barn Jacket

Barn Jackets are HUGE this year. These workwear jackets are made with a twill or heavy duty fabric and have large pockets at the hips with a corduroy collar. I love pairing mine with more dressier pieces for an elevated look. This one pictured above is a new favorite from Everlane, but I also own and love this one from Old Navy that is super affordable.

The Oversized Wool Coat

A lightweight wool coat like this is perfect for chilly fall mornings and evenings. This one from Mango is my absolute favorite. It has the perfect oversized fit that looks so chic. You can style these with more casual pieces like a sweatsuit or with more dressy pieces like trousers.

The Quilted Jacket

A quilted puffer jacket is a warm option when the weather really starts to cool. I prefer mine to have a relaxed or oversized fit so it looks more modern. This one from Quince (pictured above) is great quality for the price. I often wear mine with jeans and boots for a crisp fall day.

The Bomber Jacket

A bomber jacket is a cool layer to add to all your fall outfits. They come in all sorts of materials including sateen versions like this (mine is old from Gap) and knit versions like this. I also have this one from Old Navy and love it. I like styling mine with heeled boots for an elevated look and sneakers for a more casual day.

The Blazer

A blazer is definitely my most worn fall layer. It instantly makes me feel chic and polished the minute I put it on. My favorite is this one from Sézane. It is truly the best quality. I also highly recommend this one from Everlane which is also great quality and has the perfect relaxed fit. For a thicker option that feels more like a coat, try this wool blend blazer from Abercrombie. If you’re on a tight budget, H&M always has at least one style of blazer available in a few color options.

The Cropped Puffer Coat

A cropped puffer coat is a cool and casual jacket option for colder days. I actually love styling mine with heeled boots to fancy it up a bit. Mine is old from J.Crew, but I found several nice options at different price points that I’ve linked below.

The Shacket

They may not be the most trendy item on this list, but I will always love a cool shacket. They are easy to wear and so practical. I like them dressed up with heeled boots like in the outfit above or dressed down with joggers and sneakers. I have my eye on this one from Quince (the one pictured is old from Banana Republic Factory.)

The Leather Jacket

A leather jacket (faux or otherwise) is a chic and classic outerwear option for fall. I usually wear mine on fall date nights, but you could also wear an oversized version like this for everyday.
