Remember when chambray tops were all the rage? I wore mine so many times and every time with my favorite skinny jeans. Times have changed for sure. Chambray tops went out of style for the past couple years, but lately I’ve been seeing tons of denim tops styled with denim jeans on Instagram and Pinterest. I love when a trend comes back since it means I can just pull something from the back of my closet instead of buying something new. If you want some new outfit ideas for how to style denim on denim for 2022, I’ve got four more modern options below.
Tips For Styling Denim On Denim
When chambray tops were at their peak, style advice at the time was that you shouldn’t pair your top with bottoms in the same shade as your shirt. Now the trend is to match your top with your denim.
Also, oversized styles are much more current than fitted tops so think about either buying an oversized top or sizing up one. In order to make this look less dated, skip the skinny jeans and go for a straight or wide leg silhouette.
Just a note that denim and chambray are similar but they are actually different fabrics, although both are usually made from cotton. They give the same vibe though so feel free to wear what you have. Many retailers are now carrying denim shirts.
My chambray top is from J.Crew, and I’ve had it for years and years. Note that they have since updated it with buttons on the front pockets. Here is another similar version, and here is an affordable option. My jeans are from Madewell. I typically take a size down in this style of denim, but if you carry weight in your midsection, stay true to size. I’m wearing the petite length.

With A Sweater Worn Over The Shoulders

Starting off with my favorite denim on denim look with a sweater worn over the shoulders and my new favorite chunky loafers. I chose a black sweater with black loafers but you could wear any color of sweater you like or even a striped sweater. The chunky loafers definitely make this look more current and stylish.
Layered With A Collared Sweater

Collared sweaters are big right now so try layering one over your chambray top. I love this look with some crisp white sneakers for that casual chic vibe but any pair of flats or boots would work. Here and here are two other good options for collared sweaters.
With A Trench Coat And Casual Sneakers

If you don’t own a trench coat yet, what are you waiting for?! You can essentially throw a trench coat over anything and instantly look chic and polished. This is definitely my most worn jacket in the spring and fall seasons. Here I paired it with my favorite casual sneakers for this denim on denim look.

For this last denim on denim outfit, I’ve worn my chambray top unbuttoned, similar to a shacket with my favorite little black crop top. If crop tops aren’t your thing, you could wear a plain fitted tank or tee for this look.
