A white button down is one of my wardrobe essentials for all seasons. It’s classic and chic and so very versatile. And I know I talk about it all the time, but having a versatile wardrobe is the key to a functional closet. Traditionally, white button downs have been considered more office attire, but it works so well outside the office as well. In this post, I wanted to highlight the versatility of this piece by showing you five ways to style a white button down from the weekend, to the office, to date night.
My exact white button down is from Parallel51, a small woman owned business. It is more of a light cotton fabric which works well for warm weather. For a heavier weight option, I also own this button down from Everlane. It fits oversized (which I like) but size down if you plan on wearing it tucked most of the time.
How To Style A White Button Down
LOOK ONE: FOR THE WEEKEND
White Button Down (similar) // Denim (I took my smaller size; wearing the petite) // Birkentstocks (more sizes here) // Bag (old from Everlane; similar)
For an easy and comfortable weekend look; pair your white button down with your favorite comfortable denim and some sandals (or flats when the weather cools.) You can also swap the denim for some pull-on pants (hello, elastic waistband!) For this look, I like the easy, effortless vibe of wearing my white button down untucked. And while I think these Birkenstocks go so well with this minimalist outfit, you can wear whatever sandals are in your closet.
LOOK TWO: FOR ERRANDS
White Button Down (similar) // Denim (I took my smaller size) // Trench Coat // High Top Converse // Bag (old from Everlane; similar) // Sunglasses
High top Converse are definitely trendy right now, and I’m going to be wearing them a lot when fall rolls around. I love mixing dressy pieces (this trench coat) with casual pieces (the Converse) for a cool, modern look. For more elevated ways to style high top Converse, see this post.
LOOK THREE: FOR CASUAL FRIDAY
White Button Down (similar) // Denim (I took my smaller size) // Loafers // Bag (old from Everlane; similar) // Sunglasses
For casual Friday, pair your white button down with nondistressed denim and chunky loafers. These penny loafers from Everlane have a slight platform which makes them feel a bit more modern, but a classic loafer is a timeless shoe that will be in style for years.
LOOK FOUR: WORK FROM HOME
White Button Down (similar) // Blazer (sold out from H&M; similar) // Denim (I took my smaller size) // Sneakers // Bag (code ASHLEYR15)
Here’s a look for all you work from home ladies who need to look business professional on top. If you’re going into the office, you could switch out the denim for trousers and the sneakers for a pair of loafers or oxfords. I love the look of a blazer paired with sneakers for that cool casual vibe, though. I would wear this any day of the week.
LOOK FIVE: FOR DATE NIGHT
White Button Down (similar) // Denim (I took my smaller size) // Pumps // Clutch (vintage; similar) // Necklace // Lipstick
And to show off the versatility of a white button down, here is how I would style it for date night. I simply unbuttoned a couple more buttons and popped the collar for this look. My go-to date night accessories include these block heel pumps, a clutch bag, some nice jewelry, and a swipe of red lipstick.
