I’m all about being extra thoughtful when it comes to curating my wardrobe. I spend a lot of time deciding which pieces are the most versatile and whether each piece will fit seamlessly into my wardrobe. In this post, I’ve compiled a list of nine fall wardrobe essentials that I believe should make the base of your fall closet. These pieces are classic, will never go out of style, and can be mixed and matched to create many different outfits.
Once you have these nine pieces, you can fill in with other trendy pieces that might be in style at the moment. For each piece, I’ve linked a few options at different price points; although, I do think you should get the best quality you can afford in order to make each piece last as long as possible. You will be wearing these pieces for years and years.
Fall Wardrobe Essentials

This piece is essential for all seasons in my opinion. It’s definitely my most worn item in my wardrobe. I love these tees from Everlane which have a modern boxy cut. Go for the version without the pocket.

If you don’t own a blazer yet, I recommend purchasing a classic black blazer, but I have a few in different colors. Plaid blazers are so cute for fall, too, but a black blazer will be the most versatile. Look for one that is oversized and not fitted.

A classic button down is not only a must-have for the office, it’s also perfect for pairing with jeans or, for a more trendy look, worn unbuttoned over a fitted tee or tank. I would start with a classic white and then add in a blue button down for a second option. This one is only $35.

A sweater is definitely a fall essential. Depending on the climate you live in, opt for a light weight option like this cashmere crewneck sweater or a heavier chunky sweater like this. You can wear this on its own or layer under a blazer or other outerwear. H&M has very affordable sweater options.

Trousers are a classic piece that is super on trend right now. You can wear these to the office, but they also work well with more casual pieces like sneakers and tees for a weekend look. I own this wide leg pair, but I’m thinking of purchasing a slimmer fitting option like this as well. Here is an affordable option.

The most versatile and classic denim style is the straight leg. It works equally well with flats, boots, and sneakers. I love this high-waisted pair from Everlane which are under $100 and don’t bag out at the end of the day.

When I finally purchased my first trench coat last fall, I seriously could not stop wearing it. It is my most chic looking piece. I recommend sticking with a longer version like this that hits at your calves for a more modern look. Note that I sized down in mine. I found this similar one on sale.

Ankle boots are definitely a classic piece, but they can be difficult to style sometimes. I suggest purchasing a pair with a high skinny shaft instead of a short wide shaft. This style will pair well with straight leg denim. I own this pair pictured, but they have limited sizing; here is another similar option.

Loafers are a classic shoe that works well for both workwear and casual outfits. Pictured here is a loafer mule which I own, but I also love the classic loafer. I have this pair from Everlane that are more chunky, and I also like this loafer from Madewell. And here is an affordable option under $40.
