As I have developed my personal style over the last few years, it’s become clear that I really resonate with classic fashion. I love timeless pieces that remain stylish for years and years. And as I’ve purchased pieces within this style, my wardrobe has become so much more functional. Having pieces I can pull out year after year, season after season is always the goal. I wanted to start the year with a new series on Stitch and Salt. In this series, I’m going to be breaking down the classic pieces for each season and showing you how to style them. In this first introductory post, I’m showing you nine classic winter essentials that can form the base of your winter wardrobe. Over the next few weeks, I’m going to do style sessions for each of these pieces showing you simple outfits with classic style. This is going to be fun (and hopefully helpful!).
For winter specifically, the basics you need will vary based on the climate you live in. Obviously, what you need will differ if you live in Canada or Florida, but I’m hoping this post will meet you somewhere in the middle. Here in Kansas City, we get a range of extreme temperatures so I have experience dressing for freezing cold weather as well as hot, humid weather.
Below I’m sharing nine classic winter essentials for your winter wardrobe. I’ve linked different options at different price points for each piece. I prefer neutrals as I find they are the most versatile, but feel free to incorporate colors if that’s what you prefer!
Classic Winter Essentials
Crewneck Sweater

A crewneck sweater is essential for winter. In fact, it’s a three-season piece that will get you through most of the year. My favorite is a cream colored sweater as it transitions nicely into spring and is also perfect for including in trendy winter white monochromatic looks. I own this chunky knit sweater from Everlane. It has a cropped length, dropped shoulder, and a cute little stripe detail on the back. It fits true to size.
Plaid Blazer

Blazers are such a chic outerwear option. I always feel so put together when I’m wearing a blazer. For winter, I suggest a plaid blazer. Bonus points if you get one that is wool (mine isn’t). You can layer it over tees, sweaters, and turtlenecks for lots of different styling options. This exact blazer is from Mango and has limited sizing right now. I’ve linked more options below. I suggest finding one that fits oversized for a more trendy look rather than a fitted one that looks more corporate.
Turtleneck

A turtleneck is another must have piece for winter. I love the chic look of a simple, black, fitted turtleneck. It’s perfect for layering under cardigans, blazers, or sweaters to keep you extra warm on those cold, winter days. I’ve had this black turtleneck from J. Crew for years, and it’s held up so well through several wears. I also recently bought this tissue turtleneck which is a lighter weight and also a good option. I’ve also heard good things about the turtlenecks from Everlane (linked below!)
Mockneck or Turtleneck Sweater

A mockneck or turtleneck sweater is essential for those really cold days when you want to be mostly covered. You can even layer a slim fitting long-sleeved base layer or tee underneath for extra warmth. This exact one is my new favorite sweater from Banana Republic. I love a striped top and this one has beautiful wide sleeves. I have the petite size. I also own this one from ABLE which is so cozy.
Straight Leg Denim

Straight leg denim is definitely my go-to in the winter months. I find that this fit is so much easier to style with boots as opposed to other cuts that taper at the leg like mom jeans and skinny jeans. A straight leg jean falls perfectly over the top of the boot without bunching. This exact pair is the best and very affordable. I’ve linked other straight leg denim I own and love below.
Black Pants

A great fitting pair of black pants can easily be dressed up or down for winter. I like having a non-jean option to wear for date nights or meetings. I love these wide-leg pants from ABLE. I’ve linked a few options below.
Camel Coat

A camel coat has been on trend for decades! If you’re looking for the most versatile coat for your winter wardrobe, I definitely recommend a camel coat. I have the very popular Abercrombie Dad Coat which has a more structured feel, but I also a drapey wrap coat in a camel color as well.
Ankle Boots

Ankle boots are a classic boot option. I’ve had many over the years, but right now, I’m particularly drawn to those with a high skinny shaft. This style looks very Parisian especially when paired with classic straight leg denim. I also own this brown boot from ABLE which is almost sold out, but I’ve linked similar options below.
Chelsea Boot

A comfortable boot with a low heel is perfect for days you will be running around. There are all different kinds on trend right now although I prefer a classic one that isn’t too chunky. This exact boot has limited stock, but there are more sizes available in the other color options. I really like the brown version, too.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be styling each of these classic winter essentials to give you some more timeless outfit ideas. You can also check out my full winter capsule wardrobe here.
