In an effort to branch out of my go-to denim, I’ve been experimenting with different styles of bottoms. I recently added to my wardrobe a perfect pair of black trousers (currently being hemmed at the tailor), a chic pair of silk pants (outfit ideas coming soon!), a pair of red pinstripe pants (!!), a black mini skirt (just waiting for the weather to warm up for this one), and this white poplin midi skirt. This is a trend I’ve been considering for about a year now. I wasn’t sure if this skirt would be versatile enough to include in my wardrobe, but as you’ll see here, I was wrong. In this post, I’m showing you six ways to style a white poplin skirt. I like to think of these more as uniforms in that I can take the basic formula and mix and match pieces from my wardrobe. For instance, for one look I’ve styled this skirt with a black tee, but it would work with any tees I have in my wardrobe (too many to count.) White pretty much goes with ANYTHING.
Here are the details on this specific skirt I’m styling. I received this one as part of a recent collaboration with Everlane, but in fact, I actually was looking to buy this exact one. I know; I’m very, very lucky to have this job. I like that it’s very minimal with no ruffles or lace; I’m a basic girlie. I do find the waist to run quite big so I recommend sizing down one (I’m wearing the 00 here.) I’ve linked a few more options at different price points below as well as a plus size option.
Here’s some styling notes I’ve learned from playing dress up with this skirt:
In past styling sessions, I’ve talked about balancing your proportions (slim top with looser bottoms vs. slim bottoms with looser top) but I’m finding I’m actually caring less and less about that. Maybe it’s because my eyes I’ve gotten used to seeing oversized styles over the years, but I’m kind of digging the look of an oversized top with oversized bottoms (see the look with the button down shirt.)
I’ve included a few different color options here, but my favorite way to style this skirt was with black. I love the contrast and the added edge it adds to this more soft and feminine skirt.
This is definitely more of a casual daytime piece. I always like to see how wide a range I can style an item in the dressy to casual meter. I found that the fanciest I could get was with that waistcoast and flats. For me, this isn’t an evening or date night item. Feel free to prove me wrong though.
How To Style A White Poplin Skirt
Outfit One: With A Tee & Mesh Ballet Flats

This is the combination you’ll probably see me wearing the most and the first one I envisioned when I received it. It’s a simple look (just a tee and skirt) so I added some texture with the mesh ballet flats, woven bag, and chunky jewelry. I might wear this today! If it’s cold, you could add a leather jacket or sweater over the shoulders.
Outfit Two: With A Blazer & Flip Flops

First, say hi to my furry photobomber. Second, I love combination. Here, I’ve styled the poplin skirt with a plain white tee and sandy beige blazer. I honestly think any color blazer would work here. I love the way the flip flops show a little skin in this look but you could swap for a pair of slingback flats or loafers if you were wearing this to the office.
Outfit Three: With A Button Down & Sneakers

I wasn’t sure if this combination was going to work for me, but I’m into it! I was inspired by this reel from my Insta friend, Amy (she’s always coming up with interesting combinations – definitely follow her!) This would also look so good with a denim button down, too. I went with sneakers to make the overall look more casual but I’ve found that this skirt works with ballet flats, loafers, slingback flats, and flip flops – you’ve got options!
Outfit Four: With A Cotton Sweater & Fisherman Sandals

Here’s your spring transitional look. For right now, this is how I’ll be styling this skirt until the weather decides to reach 65 degrees here in Seattle (we’ll get there eventually.) I went with a navy cotton sweater as it’s a bit more breathable for spring. And since I really love the combination of navy and white with brown, I added these brown leather fisherman sandals and a brown suede bag.
Outfit Five: With A Tank & Sandals

And here’s your look for summer! This one feels so easy breezy and very chic for a warm weather look. I’m going to be wearing some combination of this outfit all summer long. I’ve got on a simple ribbed tank from Sézane (I love the square neckline on these!) and some strappy sandals from Dolce Vita. A simple pair of flip flops would work, too. I also added a basket bag which feels very summery as well.
Outfit Six: With A Waistcoat & Ballet Flats

This look is a bit fancy and one I’d probably wear to a brunch, baby shower, or more dressy daytime event. I don’t have many on my calendar, but it’s nice to have this outfit in my back pocket just in case.
