How To Style A Small Scarf

I’ve been wanting to add a small scarf to my accessories collection for quite some time. Per my wardrobe goals, I’m focusing my purchases on accessories this year. I shopped around for awhile and, after much consideration, I landed on this olive green striped one from Le Scarf which is a Swedish brand that describes their style as minimal Scandinavian aesthetic with a touch of Parisian luxury. Sounds perfect, right?! If you’re looking for a scarf that is timeless and beautiful, I highly recommend this brand. This is not sponsored in any way (it’s not even available for affiliate linking); the styles are just unmatched in my book (and I shopped around A LOT.) I decided to purchase a small scarf (mine is 55cm) in a cotton material as opposed to silk which reads a bit more casual. Different size scarves allow for different styling. Since mine is small, it works well for using as a neck scarf, tying around a bag, or wearing in your hair. If you want one that you can wear as a headscarf, around your shoulders, or as a top, choose one that is larger. The brand carries tons of more neutral color options if green isn’t your color. I also linked a few more scarves at the bottom of this post from different brands.

I took a little time this week to come up with ways to style my new accessory, and in this post, I’m showing you all the ways I plan to wear it. I know there are many complicated ways you can tie a scarf, but I needed options that I can pull off in 2 seconds flat without watching a YouTube video (I’m a mom and I don’t have THAT much time to get dressed) so these are all super simple (and don’t require a tutorial.)

Seven Ways To Style A Small Scarf

1. Like A Bandana

This is how I styled the scarf the first time I wore it. It’s a bit more Western inspired (like a bandana), but I actually think it looks really modern and cool, too. I simply folded the scarf in half to make one big triangle and then tied the ends at the back of my neck.

2. Tied At The Neck

This is a classic Parisian inspired way to tie a scarf and feels very very chic. This would be a great little addition to any simple outfit. For this one, I folded the scarf into one long strip, looped it around my neck, and tied it in the front. Adjust the tails of the scarf how you like it. You could have them draped slightly to the side like I have here or in the front as well.

3. Tied Around A Bun

I’m often throwing my hair into a sleek low bun on days 3 and 4 after a hair wash (I just twist my hair, loop it into a bun, and secure it with a couple wraps of a hair tie.) Here I just folded the scarf into one long strip, looped it around the bun, tied it once, and then tucked the ends in. I will also probably try wearing the scarf tied around a ponytail with the ends hanging as well.

4. Loosely Tied At The Neck

This one is similar to the second option above, but it’s tied more loosely around the neck. This one feels a bit more casual than the first, but it’s just as easy to accomplish. Fold the scarf into a long strip and tie it loosely in the front.

5. Tied Around The Wrist

I’ve been seeing this way around the street style world, and I wanted to give it a go. Think of it as scarf bracelet! I actually found this hard to accomplish without some help (Danny kindly gave me some assistance.) Fold the scarf into one long strip and tie it around your waist (ask for help if needed.)

6. As A Belt

I’ve recently gotten into belts, but those big chunky styles seem a bit too heavy for spring and summer dressing. Enter the scarf belt! I love the touch of pattern it adds. Start with the scarf in one long strip, put it through your belt loops, and tie it in the front.

7. Tied Around A Handbag

This is an easy way to add a touch of texture and pattern to your summer outfits without adding any bulk. I’ll probably be doing this a ton this summer! Again start with the scarf in one long strip then simply tie it around the handle of your bag. I particularly love how it looks with a woven style like this.
