Along my personal style journey, I’ve learned a few tips and tricks for making an outfit look more interesting. It’s really all in the details. Of course, you can put on a sweatshirt and joggers and call it a day (and sometimes I do!), but if you’re interested in zhuzhing things up a bit, then definitely read these tips below. With this advice, you can make even a jeans and tee look cool and effortless.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OUTFITS MORE INTERESTING
ADD TEXTURE
This is one of my favorite tips for creating interesting outfits. Texture is the key to turning a simple outfit into a lewk! By texture, I mean combining different materials like knits, leather, denim, silk, satin, velvet or suede, but also through texturized pieces like these woven ballet flats or a pebbled bag. Try pairing a tweed or bouclé lady jacket with your favorite denim, then adding a leather flat, and a suede bag.
STYLE YOUR OUTFIT
Just putting on a top and bottom does not an outfit make. You need to ‘style’ your outfit. Try different tucking styles (tucked, half tucked, or untucked), cuff your sleeves, unbutton a button or two, cuff your jeans, pop your collar. Just play around here and see what looks good.
PLAY WITH PROPORTIONS
Fashion these days is definitely trending towards an oversized look. I usually prefer to balance oversized styles with fitted pieces, but I’ve also been playing a bit with the ‘loose, loose’ look. For example, wearing an oversized sweater with wide leg jeans. This can feel off at first if you’re new to this style, but give it a few wears to get used to.
ADD A THIRD PIECE
You’ve probably heard this advice before, but adding a third piece to your outfit is another way to make it more interesting. Third pieces can include a piece of outerwear like a denim jacket, blazer, or vest or accessories like a scarf, hat, bag or even a statement earring.
ACCESSORIZE
Along the same lines as a third piece, accessorizing is key for making interesting outfits. You’ll almost always find me wearing earrings, a necklace, a couple of rings, sunglasses, a bag, and of course, my must have accessory – a red lip.
ADD A POP OF COLOR
All the cool girlies are doing it! Another way to zhuzh up an outfit is to add a pop of color or print either through an accessory like a red bag or snakeskin belt. I love the look of a fun colored sock with loafers.
ADD LAYERS
This tip is a bit seasonal and it can vary based on your climate, but any opportunity you get to add a layer or two will definitely take your outfit up a notch. I’m fairly minimal when it comes to styling and can’t stand fussy outfits with tons of layers so for me this usually means layering a blazer over a tee or throwing a sweater over my shoulders. You can also add a tee under a simple crewneck sweater to add more dimension.
LOOK FOR ELEVATED BASICS
A closet full of basics is essential for having a versatile wardrobe. When I’m shopping for basics, I look for pieces that have a few interesting details. One brand that does this so well is Sézane. Their timeless pieces will have the little details that make it stand out. A beautiful neckline, a button there, an embroidered cuff. All these little things give your outfit that little extra.
