In early September, I like to create a bucket list of sorts to make the most of the fall season. Making this list reminds me of all the fun fall traditions we have to look forward to. Fall is my absolute favorite season – the first chill in the air, pumpkin spice scents everywhere, football on the television, and the smells of something baking in the oven. It’s the best!
This year, I created a list of twenty fall activities to enjoy the season. This is not meant to be a list to check off. That’s way too much pressure for an already busy time of year. Instead, think of it as some ideas to enjoy this wonderful season.
Fall Activities To Enjoy The Season

Make a pumpkin spice latte at home.
I’m usually a black coffee kind of girl (we make ours in our Chemex every morning!) but I’d love to add a little seasonal spice to my coffee in the mornings. This recipe looks yummy!
Buy mums for the front porch.
Mums are definitely one of those plants that are quintessentially fall. I typically like to purchase two in an orange or purple color to put on the front porch. So festive!
Watch You’ve Got Mail.
I always have a September viewing of You’ve Got Mail with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time, and I think it’s best watched in the fall.

Make a fall capsule wardrobe.
I love making a fall capsule every year to make getting dressed a breeze. Here is my fall capsule from last year plus outfit ideas.
Make a big batch of chili with cornbread.
Fall and winter is really the only acceptable time for chili so I make it often when the weather cools. We usually make this classic beef recipe or this turkey version. This year, I’ll be attempting a version without beans. We like to add all the toppings plus a little white vinegar which is a little family tradition.
Bake a batch of pumpkin muffins.
I’m one of those people that fully embraces pumpkin flavors in the fall. I love mixing up a batch of pumpkin muffins which fill the house with a delicious aroma while they bake. We usually make this recipe for a healthy option and this recipe for something a bit more indulgent.

Visit the pumpkin patch.
It’s not fall without a visit to the pumpkin patch. We love going to one with additional seasonal activities like a petting zoo or corn maze.
Decorate our home for fall and Halloween.
I’ve already started adding a few fall accents to our home, and once October 1st rolls around, I’ll add some spooky decor for Halloween.
Watch football.
There is something about the sounds of a football game on T.V. that feels like fall. We are big Chiefs fans, but now that we live in Seattle, we often tune into the Seahawks games as well.

Carve pumpkins.
Our family back in Kansas City has an annual pumpkin carving contest (it gets quite competitive!) and this year, we plan to participate remotely.
Eat an apple cider donut.
I love the subtle sweetness and sugar dusted deliciousness of a freshly baked apple cider donut. Is there anything better?
Bake a homemade pie.
There is something about fall that brings out the baker in me. This year, I’d love to try baking a homemade pie, a feat I’ve only done a handful of times. I plan to go classic with a pumpkin or apple.

Attend a fall festival in our city.
Every city has some sort of fall festival. Shop for local goods, drink some apple cider, and play some games. So very Gilmore Girls.
Make a pot of soup.
It’s not only sweater season, it’s also soup season. There is nothing more warm and comforting than a big bowl of soup served with some crusty bread. This one is delicious.
Go Trick-or-treating.
Having kids means vicariously reliving your favorite childhood moments through their eyes. I look forward to taking my kids trick-or-treating every year.

Dress up for Halloween.
I haven’t dressed up for Halloween in years, but I’d love to get an easy costume this year, even a simple witch or cat costume will do.
Watch Hocus Pocus 1 & 2.
I don’t care what anyone says, I will always love these movies. One of my favorite fall activities is cozying up for a fall movie with a warm drink.
Make pumpkin pancakes.
You’ll see that many of our fall traditions are food focused. I love the flavors of fall and infusing those into our Sunday pancake and waffle tradition.

Buy fall scented candles.
Burning fall scented candles brings me such joy every year. I recently picked up this one from our local grocery store, but I usually buy the whole fall collection from this candle brand when it becomes available.
Watch the Halloween episodes of Friends.
One of my favorite shows of all time, I love rewatching the Halloween episodes of Friends every year.
Go on a fall hike to see the changing leaves.
Before the weather turns too cold, I like to squeeze in one last little hike with the kids to see the autumn leaves. It’s always so beautiful in nature this time of year.
