I’m so excited to share my fall capsule wardrobe with you today. I actually find making these very enjoyable as well as enlightening. Having a style blog can result in having a lot of clothes. It’s nice to narrow it down to a collection of pieces to choose from so I don’t get too overwhelmed during this busy fall season. In an upcoming post, I’m going to share some outfit ideas using these pieces. Below I’m sharing some thoughts behind this capsule.
My Capsule Wardrobe Thought Process
- Fall is the season of BOOTS, and while I love boots, they can be hard to pair with bottoms. You have to accept that one pair of jeans will not go with every single pair of shoes. Straight leg jeans and wide leg jeans pair really well with heeled boots, but I prefer a slim cut jean for my flat boots and loafers. This is why I’ve tried to include not only different washes of jeans but also different styles of jeans (straight, wide leg, and slim cut.)
- Creating a capsule wardrobe for your actual lifestyle is crucial. In past capsule wardrobes, I’ve included more trousers and dresses and never end up wearing them all that much. I’m a denim girl to the core so I included more denim options. If you work an office that requires business casual or if you prefer a more feminine style with dresses and skirts than you should include more of those options.
- This summer we moved from Kansas City, a place with pretty extreme weather fluctuations, to Seattle where the weather is more temperate and rainy. This year, I added two rain-resistant outerwear options to my capsule wardrobe as well as more rain-friendly shoe options. We also walk a lot here so I need shoes that can be worn for at least one mile (the walk to and from school.) I don’t like having to change shoes throughout the day based on my activity so comfortable but stylish shoes were a must.
- I’m mixing a few fun and trendy pieces into my capsule wardrobe this year. Your wardrobe doesn’t have to be 100% classic and timeless. Although that is what the majority of these pieces are, I like to add in two to three trendy items to keep it fresh and modern.
FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE: TOPS

White Button Down // For simplicity sake, I’m including a basic white button down here in this graphic (I own this one and would recommend it,) but I’m actually using this color-blocked one from Darling in my capsule wardrobe. Use my code ASHLEYR15 for 15% off.
Striped Tee | White Tee | Black Tee | Gray Graphic Tee // I like to have a variety of tees for layering in the fall. I sized up in the striped tee.
Striped Sweater // This sweater pictured is from Alex Mill, but I own this cotton one from Sézane.
Gray Hoodie (affordable option) | Graphic Sweatshirt (affordable option) // These two pieces will be for more casual outfits on the weekends or days when I don’t feel like getting dressed up.
Denim Shirt (similar) // Denim is really big this year especially outside of jeans. I plan on wearing many of denim on denim outfits this fall.
Black Sweater (similar) // This is a new purchase from Sézane. It is ribbed with buttons on the sleeves and a little bit of a cropped fit.
White Blouse // I like having a nice top to wear with jeans when I want to feel a little more dressed up. This one has a modern style with an accentuated shoulder detail and polo style neckline. Use code ASHLEYR15 for 15% off.
Brown Cardigan // Chocolate brown is also another trend for fall, and I’m wearing it in the form of a SUPER cozy oversized cardigan.
Cream Sweater // This is a staple for me in for fall and winter.
Gray Sweater // My exact sweater I have in mind has yet to be released as part of the fall collection from one of my favorite brands. I’ll update this post when it becomes available. *Update: Gray sweater now available from ABLE; link is updated. Use code ASHLEYR15 for 15% off.
White Silk Cami // I’ll be wearing this cami for date night or layering it under my cozy cardigans.
FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE: OUTERWEAR

Denim Jacket (similar) // This denim jacket is very oversized which is what I was going for. I’ve been pairing it with my jeans for that cool denim on denim look.
Raincoat (similar) // I just purchased this raincoat after searching around for hours for a chic raincoat option for fall.
Ecru Chore Jacket // My chore jacket is a classic Sézane style that was just released in this ecru wool version with a velvet color (see the link, not the one pictured) It is really beautiful.
Black Blazer // This is one of my most worn pieces. I like that the sleeves are cinched so you don’t have to worry about scrunching them up.
Sweater Coat // I love the long line of this sweater coat, and the green color as well. I plan on throwing this over all my tops.
Trench Coat // This is another rain-friendly option. I also own this trench coat and love it, but it is not water-resistant. I took a size up for a more oversized fit.
FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE: BOTTOMS

Wide Leg Jeans // My exact wide leg jeans are unfortunately sold out at the moment, but here and here are similar options. *Update: jeans have been restocked!
Black Denim // I chose this mom jean style that is fitted through the thigh and opens up a bit at the ankle. This style is really similar.
Straight Denim // These classic Levi’s are a personal favorite jean of mine especially for pairing with boots.
Navy Trousers // Navy is a new color I’ve been trying out this year, and I’m into it! I recommend sizing down in these pants.
Slim Cut Denim // Another pair of Levi’s, this one in a more slim-fit cut. These are the perfect medium wash.
Ecru Denim // These wide leg style ecru denim fit so well, and I like that they are more off-white than bright white for fall.
Black Pants // A pair of black pants is a must have for a fall capsule especially for you office girlies.
Denim Maxi Skirt // I like to include a few trendy pieces in my capsule wardrobe to make it more fun, and this denim maxi skirt is one of those pieces. I sized down 2 sizes so it would fit higher on my waist.
FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE: SHOES

Sling Back Flats // These are such a chic fall shoe. Mine are old from Marc Fisher, but I’m linking a similar option. Use code ASHLEYR15 for 15% off.
Brown Loafers // Loafers are another must have for fall. I LOVE this pair from Frēda Salvador (use code STITCHANDSALT15 for 15% off your first purchase), but here and here are more affordable options.
Light Chelsea Boots // I think having a lighter color shoe option in your fall capsule wardrobe is necessary for making more monochromatic looks. It just looks cool and interesting, too. Use this link for $25 off at Poppy Barley.
Sneakers // I don’t actually own these sneakers yet, but I will when they come back in stock! This is another trendy item I’m including in my fall capsule.
Black Chelsea Boots // Based on our climate and my lifestyle, chelsea boots are going to be my most worn shoe this fall so I’m including two color options. Use code ASHROHR for 20% off your first purchase.
Black Heels // These heels are comfortable enough to wear everyday; they feel like socks!
Brown Ankle Boots // These chocolate brown boots are so chic. The sock style makes them easy to pair with different styles of jeans (your bottoms won’t scrunch up at the top of the boot!)
Black Ankle Boots // Classic and chic; black ankle boots are another must have shoe style for me.
In my next post, I’ll be sharing some outfit ideas that I created with these looks. And be sure to follow along over the next couple months as I create real life outfits using this capsule.
