The quintessential fall outfit, a sweater and jeans, is one I wear often in the fall and winter months. I have a few styling tips to mix it up and make this simple outfit seem fresh and new . In this post, I have nine ways to style a sweater and jeans. First, I’m showing you three base outfits that totally work on their own. Then I’m showing you two simple ways to upgrade each outfit.
I collaborated with Everlane this month on Instagram to share these sweater and jeans looks, but this blog post is not sponsored. These items were, however, gifted as part of the campaign. I shop at Everlane regularly using my own money, and truly love the brand which carries quality capsule wardrobe style pieces at fair prices.
Nine Ways To Style A Sweater & Jeans
Look One: A Fitted Sweater + Barrel Jeans
In this first look, I’ve paired a slim fitting ribbed sweater with barrel jeans. With this style of jeans that has a wider silhouette, wearing a more fitted top balances the proportions. This type of sweater that fits slim is a versatile piece for your capsule wardrobe, too. It can be worn on it’s own or layered under jackets and blazers for more warmth. Now let me show you two options for changing up this base outfit.
Option One: Layer With A Relaxed Fit Blazer & Ballet Flats
A blazer is one of my top choices for fall layers, and this fitted sweater works well for layering underneath. I love the combination of a masculine piece like a blazer with more feminine pieces like these ballet flats, but you could wear any style of shoe with this outfit.
Option Two: Layer With A Long Jacket & Sneakers
The second way to mix it up is by layering with a longer jacket like this trench coat and pairing it with some slim sneakers. My trench coat is almost sold out, but I’ve linked a few other similar alternatives below.

Look Two: Half Zip Sweater & Black Jeans
In this look, I’ve styled this beautiful half zip beige sweater with black straight leg jeans. A half zip sweater is a cool and casual sweater option that’s a little different than a plain crewneck. This particular sweater is made with merino wool, and it’s not itchy at all. It also has the most amazing big collar that keeps your neck nice and cozy. You could totally style this sweater on it’s own, but I also think it works well layered with pieces underneath as seen in the two options below.
Option One: Layer With A Turtleneck & Loafers
When the weather turns cold, and you need to add some layers, consider adding a turtleneck underneath. I paired this look with some socks and loafers (these are an older pair from Everlane, but I’ve linked a similar version below.) This look is so warm and would take you right into winter.
Option Two: Layer With A Button Down & Boots
For another option, you could layer a button down underneath your half zip sweater. I love the preppy vibes and the double collar. I’ve paired this look with a pair of my favorite booties. This look would work for a casual office or consider swapping the jeans for black trousers for business casual.

Look Three: Oversized Sweater + Slim Cut Jeans
This classic look of a crewneck sweater, jeans, and ankle boots will never be wrong. It’s simple yet timeless and chic. This boxy crewneck sweater has an oversized fit and pairs well with slim cut jeans like these. It’s made of a thicker weight cotton and works well for cooler temperatures. Style it simply like this, or see two more options to mix it up below.
Option One: Layer With A White Tee
One really simple way to mix it up is by layering it with a tee. The fabric of the tee peeking out along the neckline just makes your sweater pop a bit more. I paired this look with a trendy combination of socks and ballet flats (I know it’s different, but give it a try!)
Option Two: Layer With A Button Down
Another simple option to add interest and warmth is to layer a button down underneath your crewneck sweater. You could use any color, but I love this combination of light blue and brown. For this look, I kept these chocolate brown boots that just match perfectly with this chocolate brown sweater.
