Loafers are a timeless and versatile footwear choice that is chic and classic. They can really elevate a casual outfit or add sophistication to an office wear look. However, loafers can be a bit tricky to style. In this blog post, I’m giving you a few tips for styling loafers plus some outfit inspiration from casual looks with denim to more polished outfits for the office.
How To Style Loafers
For a timeless wardrobe, choose a slim and sleek loafer over chunky styles.
Chunky loafers grew in popularity the past few years, but the trend has mellowed. If you’re planning to invest in your wardrobe, I recommend sticking with a high quality, classic loafer with a slim silhouette.
Try styling your loafers with socks.
Socks are having a moment, and I’m here for it. I love when trends are also practical! I prefer a slinky, ankle sock over chunky styles for pairing with loafers. Neutral options like ivory or gray are a good choice, but you can also try a fun color like red or a patterned style like plaid.
Play with different styles of bottoms.
Choosing the right style of bottom to style with your loafers can be tricky. I find that cropped, ankle length pants or jeans are the easiest to pull off. However, play around with full length styles; style has no rules!
Add some femininity.
Loafers are a menswear inspired shoe style so to balance your look, add some femininity to your outfit. Throw a sweater over your shoulders to add texture or pair with feminine pieces or accessories like a lady jacket, jewelry, or even red lipstick.
Loafer Outfits
With A Button Down & Jeans

Shirt (I sized down) / Jeans / Sweater / Socks / Loafers
This look combines an oversized denim shirt, straight leg jeans, and loafers for a smart casual outfit. This is a perfect work from home or casual Friday outfit.
With A Striped Top, Jeans, & Trench Coat

Top / Trench (I sized up) / Jeans / Loafers
This classic outfit pairs a striped tee with a trench coat (my favorite French inspired outfit combination!) with loafers. I chose to wear a pair of full length jeans for a cool, modern look. You could absolutely stick to a classic ankle length jean though.

With A Cardigan Sweater & Trousers

Cardigan (size down) / Pants (size up) / Loafers / Bag
I would wear this Parisian chic look every week if I worked in an office. Here, I’ve paired a cardigan sweater with a pair of high waisted trousers in a classic navy.
With A Sweater & Jeans

Sweater / Tee (I sized up) / Jeans / Socks / Loafers / Bag
This simple casual chic outfit is one I wear often in the fall and winter. It combines a relaxed fit wool sweater (I threw a tee underneath for more warmth) with black jeans, and loafers.
With A Blazer and Jeans

Tee (I sized up) / Blazer / Sweater / Jeans / Loafers / Socks
This classic and timeless outfit pairs loafers with a blazer and jeans. I added a sweater over my shoulders for interest and texture. Use this base as your ‘uniform’ and play with different colors here. Try a camel blazer with a navy sweater or a gray blazer with a black sweater.
With A Lady Jacket & Black Pants

Lady Jacket / Pants / Loafers / Socks / Bag
This look combines masculine and feminine pieces for a balanced look. It’s elegant and sophisticated and works well for the office.
