One of the most elegant shoe styles for fall and winter is the knee high boot. If you’re someone who wears business casual for work, I definitely recommend having a pair in your wardrobe. They are so timeless and chic, and you’ll have them in your closet for years and years. They can be a bit more limited styling-wise then say an ankle boot, but I’m sharing a few tips below for how to style knee high boots. I’ve also given you seven knee high boot outfit ideas below and my favorites to shop at the bottom of this post.
I recently purchased this pair from Schutz after having them on my wishlist for years, and they are the boots I’m stying in this post. They are just the timeless style I’ve been wanting. The fit true to size.
Tips For Styling Knee High Boots
Opt For A Heeled Boot
There are several flat options available, and they look great on some people, but a heeled version is much more universally flattering especially if you’re petite like me. Opt for a block heel style if you’re worried about walking in a heel.
Pair With Slim or Skinny Jeans
The easiest way to style knee high boots with jeans is to choose a pair of jeans that fits slim through the thighs and legs like a slim straight or skinny jean. This will avoid any weird bunching when tucking your jeans into your boots. However, if you’re up for trying a new trendy style, you can pair your boots with a more baggy style.
Look For A Pair That Isn’t Too Skinny At The Ankle
I prefer styles that don’t taper in at the ankle and instead have a more straight cut all the way up the boot. To me, these look more modern and chic. For example, compare this boot to this boot.
Be Sure Balance Your Outfit
If you’re styling knee high boots with jeans or a mini skirt, I prefer a top with more volume like a boxy sweater or relaxed fit blazer to balance out the outfit. Avoid anything that’s too tight which will make your look feel dated.
How To Style Knee High Boots
With A Sweater Dress
A sweater dress and knee high boots is a timeless pairing. You can opt for a mini dress like the one pictured here or go with a midi or maxi dress. Any combination of a leather or suede boot plus a cozy knit works! I recently purchased this one from Tuckernuck, and plan to style it for the holidays. I also own two sweater dresses from Amazon (see here and here) which are great quality and really affordable.

With A Blazer & Skinny Jeans
Another chic option is to pair your knee high boots with skinny jeans and a blazer. To keep this outfit from looking dated, stick with a blazer that has a relaxed or boxy fit. I paired it here with a turtleneck for warmth, but you could also just wear a tee or even a silk camisole for date night.

With A Sweater & Shorts
This trendy look combines a pair of trouser shorts with a sweater, tights, and knee high boots. I added a belt, hoop earrings, and a suede bag for more texture and interest. You could forgo tights if you live in a warmer climate.

With A Sweater & Slip Skirt
This chic and dressy look would be perfect for a winter get-together. A short, boxy sweater works best here so you aren’t creating too much bulk around the waist. I own this slip skirt and can vouch that is it is great quality. It fits a bit big in the waist so I sized down.

With An Oversized Sweater & Leggings
For those of you who prefer more casual style, try this look with leggings. I would stick with a pair of thicker, quality leggings that you don’t work out in. Pair this with a chic, long wool coat.

With A Button Down & Mini Skirt
For another dressy option that works well for the office, try pairing your knee high boots with a mini skirt and button down. I can just imagine myself walking around the boulevards in Paris in this outfit (a girl can dream, right?) It is classy and chic yet a bit sexy, too. Add tights if you live in a colder climate.

With A Long Dress
Knee high boots work well with almost any dress, but I particularly love the way they look with a long dress. This denim dress is cool and edgy, but I’ve linked several dresses below that would all work well with knee high boots.
