One of my spring and summer staples for 2023 is an oversized white button down. It has a cool, effortless, casual vibe that I’m really into. This exact oversized button down is the Max Shirt from Sézane. It was gifted, but this post is not sponsored. This type of shirt is so versatile. I am sharing seven outfit ideas with an oversized button down shirt in this post. Though I dress pretty casually in my normal life, I shared a mix of outfits so you can see how to style it different ways from work to weekend to date night.
I’m so impressed with the fit and quality of this button down. It’s a medium weight material that isn’t see through. I’m petite so I sized down. When I wear shirts untucked, I prefer them to hit my upper thighs so my legs don’t look too short. It has a little bit of a longer hem in the back. I found this shirt worked best either completely untucked or half tucked. There is a lot of fabric so I found tucking it to result in too much bulk for me. For a white button down that works well for tucking in, I recommend this one from Everlane.
How To Style An Oversized Button Down
LOOK ONE: With Washed Black Denim And Fisherman Mules

Sézane Max Shirt (I sized down) // Madewell Perfect Vintage Jean (I sized down) // Madewell Fisherman Mules // Clare V. Bag (purchased from The RealReal; similar) // Sheena Marshall Dylan Necklace (code ASHROHR10) // Sela Designs Makena Hoops (code ASHLEYROHR10) // Nordstrom BP Cat Eye Sunglasses
For a trendy casual look, I paired this button down with some washed black denim and cream colored fisherman mules. When wearing an oversized shirt like this, I prefer to wear a slimmer fitting jean like these Madewell Perfect Vintage Jeans which fit like a skinny jean but are tapered at the ankles. I own many pairs of these, and I always take my smaller size.
LOOK TWO: With Linen Shorts And Brown Leather Sandals

Sézane Max Shirt (I sized down) // Madewell Brightside Crop Tank (I sized down) // Madewell Cotton-Linen Shorts (I sized down) // Beek Finch Sandals (affordable option) // J.Crew Straw Market Tote // Sheena Marshall Jewelry Dylan Necklace (code ASHROHR10) // Sela Designs Makena Hoops (code ASHLEYROHR10) // Nordstrom BP Round Sunglasses
For a coastal grandmother vibe, try wearing your oversized button down with some linen shorts. To create a little bit of a waist, I wore my button down unbuttoned with a cropped tank underneath. Here, I’ve paired it with some chic leather toe ring sandals and a straw tote bag.
LOOK THREE: With White Denim And Huarache Sandals

Sézane Max Shirt (I sized down) // Everlane Original Cheeky Jean in Bone (I took my smaller size; similar in same wash) // Nisolo Huarache Sandals (size down an half size, code ASHLEY20) // Madewell Woven Bag // Sheena Marshall Jewelry Dylan Necklace (code ASHROHR10) // Sela Designs Makena Hoops (code ASHLEYROHR10)
An all white look is always so chic. I added in some texture with these huarache sandals and a woven handbag. My white denim is an older style from Everlane. I’ve linked a really similar pair above that I also own in a different wash.
LOOK FOUR: With Straight Denim And White Sneakers

Sézane Max Shirt (I sized down) // Levi’s 501 Crop Jean (I took my smaller size) // Freda Salvador Eda D’Orsay Sneaker (affordable option) // Anthropologie Lindy Woven Clutch // Nordstrom BP Cat Eye Sunglasses // Sheena Marshall Jewelry Dylan Necklace (code ASHROHR10) // Sela Designs Makena Hoops (code ASHLEYROHR10)
This is an easy weekend look that I know I’ll be wearing all spring. White sneakers are a must for me in spring and summer. These sneakers were my birthday gift this year, and they are a bit pricey. I linked a more budget-friendly option which my sister purchased, and she says they fit great and are comfy with a little breaking in time.
LOOK FIVE: With Poplin Shorts and Sandals

Sézane Max Shirt (I sized down) // Madewell Poplin Shorts (I sized down) // ABLE Whitney Sandals (code ASHLEYR15) // Portland Leather Luna Bag // Sheena Marshall Jewelry Dylan Necklace (code ASHROHR10) // Sela Designs Makena Hoops (code ASHLEYROHR10) // Nordstrom BP Cat Eye Sunglasses
These poplin shorts are so easy breezy. I love them paired with a button down shirt. I actually preordered the matching button down to go with these shorts, but I’m still waiting on it to come in. This high contrast look with black and white works, too!
LOOK SIX: With Black Pants And Slingback Flats

Sézane Max Shirt (I sized down) // Everlane Dream Pant (I sized down) // Marc Fisher Slingback Flats (similar) // Parker Clay Tote Bag // Sheena Marshall Jewelry Dylan Necklace (code ASHROHR10) // Sela Designs Makena Hoops (code ASHLEYROHR10)
For the office, you can pair your oversized button down with black pants and flats. This outfit works because these pants are more slim fitting. I would avoid pairing this with wider cut trousers.
LOOK SIX: With A Lace Bodysuit And Pumps

Sézane Max Shirt (I sized down) // Lace Bodysuit (sold out from Zara; similar; similar) // Levi’s 501 Cropped Jean (old wash; similar) // Marc Fisher Block Heel Pumps // Vintage Clutch (similar) // Sheena Marshall Jewelry Dylan Necklace (code ASHROHR10) // Sela Designs Makena Hoops (code ASHLEYROHR10)
I always like to include a date night look in these style sessions. I generally dislike buying things that can only be worn for date night as we really don’t go out all that often and those extra pieces take up valuable closet space! I bought this lace bodysuit for the holidays and love it worn under more masculine pieces like a blazer or a button down. It is old from Zara, but I linked some similar options.
