A turtleneck is a must for a fall and winter capsule wardrobe! I just bought this tissue turtleneck from J. Crew during the Black Friday sales, and I love that it’s lightweight and fitted – perfect for layering. In today’s post, I’m showing you five simple ways to style a turtleneck for fall and winter. For these outfits, I’m utilizing all the fall and winter layers you should have in your closet – a blazer, oversized sweater, and denim jacket. Plus I’m showing different ways to wear this turtleneck for different occasions. It’s just so CLASSIC.
This exact turtleneck fits true to size. Like I said, this one is fairly lightweight (but not see through with the right bra). I also own the J. Crew Perfect Fit Turtleneck which is slightly thicker and comes in a similar colorway. Both are great options!
How To Style A Turtleneck
LOOK ONE
Turtleneck // Denim (see below for sizing) // Ankle Boots (low stock, similar, similar) // Hat
One thing that I love about a turtleneck is that it can be worn alone or styled with layers. This makes them super versatile and perfect for a capsule wardrobe. For this first look, I styled this turtleneck with my favorite denim of the moment (so good!), a good pair of ankle boots, and a fun felt hat for some interest. You could also add some statement earrings or a cute headband. I sized down one in this denim, but they are very tight (I prefer them this way.) If you carry weight in your midsection, don’t size down.
LOOK TWO
Turtleneck // Blazer // Denim // Boots
This look is so classic. A turtleneck with an oversized blazer will always be in style. You could even add a belt here to add even more interest. I have another pair of mid-wash Levi’s on plus these cute (and affordable!) black ankle boots with a tight shaft that are perfect for wearing under straight denim.
LOOK THREE
Turtleneck // Sweater // Jeans // Boots
When winter comes, you’re going to need some ways to layer your tops for warmth. A turtleneck layered under an oversized sweater is another classic look. This alpaca sweater is from Everlane and sustainably made. I broke out my skinny jeans for this look, and I had to dust them off! It’s been awhile, but I do plan on pairing my them a ton with these knee high boots this winter.
LOOK FOUR
Turtleneck // Wide Leg Pants // Heels // Clutch (vintage; similar) // French Pins
Here is an easy way to dress up your turtleneck. I love the look of a fitted top with wide leg pants. I sized down one in these pants so they would fit my waist, and the fit is spot on. I added my favorite block heel black pumps, my vintage clutch bag, and some french pins for a classy low bun.
LOOK FIVE
Turtleneck // Denim Jacket (size up one) // Denim (old from Everlane; similar) // Sneakers // Sunglasses
And lastly, we are really highlighting the versatility of a turtleneck by pairing it with a denim jacket and sneakers for a casual and comfortable look. I love wearing my white denim in the winter so look for these in upcoming outfits!
