It’s shorts season and, whether you like wearing them or not, sometimes they are the only option when the weather is hot. In this post, I have five styles of shorts for summer I recommend having in your closet. I’ve rounded up several options in each category at various price points, including the pairs I own and recommend. Shorts can be tricky to shop for so consider buying a few pairs to try out and returning those that don’t fit well. Personally, I prefer shorts with about a 5″ inseam (this pair for example) and that also have a wider cut in the legs.

My Favorite Shorts For Summer

LINEN SHORTS
Linen shorts are perfect for hot days. I own this pair from J. Crew and the matching linen button down as well. Whether you pair them with a matching top or style them with a casual ribbed tank, these will be your go-to shorts for summer.

DENIM SHORTS
Denim shorts are probably the hardest style to shop for. The perfect fit for your specific body type can be tricky. In my opinion, the best fitting denim shorts are the Agolde Parker Long Shorts. They are the Goldilocks of denim shorts – not too long, not too short, not too tight. I also like the Everlane A-Line Denim Shorts which have a longer inseam and wider cut in the thighs. If you’re up for it, Bermuda shorts (shorts with a long inseam) are very trendy right now, and, although I don’t like how they fit on my petite frame, they look great on others. I’ve linked a pair below.

PULL ON SHORTS
This style of short has an elastic waistband for extra comfort. They are easy to wear and what I reach for when I feel bloated or need to throw something on quickly. The trick to styling a more casual short like this while still looking put together is to pair it with more elevated pieces. I like styling mine with a lightweight linen or cotton button down and a nice pair of sandals. Of course, you can go full on casual with a tank or tee and footbed sandals, too, if the day calls for it.

TAILORED SHORTS
Tailored shorts are possibly the most versatile option as you can style them for work with a blouse or a button down shirt, but also for the weekend with a linen top or ribbed tank. I own this pair from Everlane pictured here.

SKORTS
Skorts are making a big comeback this year, and I’m happy to see it. They are so much more mom friendly than mini skirts, and they can be styled dressy or casual. Look for an upcoming post all about how to style skorts for summer. I just purchased this one from Aritzia
