I love celebrating holidays, especially now that we have two young kids. I get to relive the magic with them, and it makes me so happy. When there is an upcoming season or holiday, I always go online to our local library’s site and put seasonal books on hold. Some of these books can be really popular so I like to do this a few weeks in advance.
Today I’m sharing all the fall and Halloween themed books that we’ve read and loved over the years. These are books that the kids request to read over and over.
Bear Feels Scared by Darma Wilson and Jane Chapman
This book is part of a collection of Bear Books that began with Bear Snores On. This one is not seasonal per-say, but as the season brings more ‘spooky’ characters and themes to life, a book about feeling scared can be beneficial.
Curious George Goes to a Costume Party by Margret and H.A. Rey
My kids LOVE Curious George! We own almost every story written about this curious little monkey. In fact, Ellie’s 2nd birthday party was Curious George themed! This one is super cute. And while we’re on the topic of Curious George, check out Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest. We watch the movie on Hulu. It’s a Fall classic for us.
Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Pak
I love finding books with beautiful illustrations (my husband is a designer so he’s taught me a few things about good design). This is a gorgeous book that talks about the changes that present during the transition from Summer to Autumn. The author also has books centered on other seasons as well.
Ladybug Girl and the Dress-Up Dilemma by Jacky Davis and David Soman
We really enjoy the Ladybug Girl series of books. The stories keep the kids interested, and each one has a different lesson. This one is about being true to yourself.
Little Blue Truck’s Halloween by Alice Schertle and Jill McElmurry
Do you have a child that loves vehicles? Leo is obsessed with cars and trucks so he loves the Little Blue Truck books. This one is a lift-the-flap book which is fun for the little ones.
Pick a Pumpkin by Patricia Toht and Jarvis
Another book with beautiful illustrations. This one is a follow up to Pick a Pine Tree, a book I’m sure you’ll see on my Winter season book list.
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and Alex Scheffler
This book is written and illustrated by the same team that wrote other popular books like The Gruffalo and Stick Man. The story is also available as a short film.
The Scarecrow written by Beth Ferry and illustrated by Eric Fan and Terry Fan
This book was new to us this year as it was just released in 2019. It’s the adorable story of the friendship between a scarecrow and a crow. I really love finding books that both the kids and I enjoy reading.
We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger and Miki Sakamoto
This book follows the same pattern as the very popular book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury. My kids love collecting leaves so this story is a hit in our family.
