I absolutely love the holidays and celebrating the season with family and friends. I also love easy entertaining ideas that seem fancy but are actually super easy to throw together. I shared a holiday charcuterie board on the blog last week, and in this post, I’m sharing an easy hot chocolate bar you can put together for kids. For this hot chocolate bar, I simply added all the ingredients to a few bowls and whipped up some quick hot chocolate using a mix. The hot chocolate gets ladled into mugs and then the kids can top their hot chocolate with their toppings of choice. My kids LOVED this hot chocolate bar, and we plan to make it again when we have our annual Polar Express viewing night.
How To Make A Hot Chocolate Bar
Make Your Whipped Cream
You can buy store bought whipped cream and no kid will ever judge you for it, but I think homemade is SO much better. It’s also really really easy to make. Add a container of heavy cream to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment (or use a hand mixer) along with 2 tablespoons of confectioner’s sugar and whip on high speed until soft peaks form.
Place Your Toppings In Bowls & Place On A Board
You can use any toppings that sound good to you, but I used seasonal sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, crushed candy canes, marshmallows (this one is mandatory!) and the aforementioned whipped cream. I also had some leftover cookies that I added along with some candy canes.
Make Your Hot Chocolate
I used this mix to make our hot chocolate (it was delicious!) but you can make it homemade if you prefer. If you’re planning to serve this at a party, prepare the hot chocolate and keep it warmed on the stove or add it to a slow cooker on the warm setting.
Set Out Mugs And Utensils
Next to your hot chocolate and board, put out some mugs (festive ones if you have them!) and spoons for your toppings. You’ll also need a ladle to spoon the hot chocolate into mugs. You could also put out some Baileys or bourbon for the adults to make spiked hot chocolate! Add extra spoons alongside. This hot chocolate is best eaten with a spoon!
