Every year on Thanksgiving and Christmas, our family makes a batch of this egg nog. I’m not one for hyperbole, but this is THE BEST egg nog recipe. It will ruin you for store bought egg nog which, in my opinion, is usually disgusting. This recipe has been passed down through my family for decades and is so delicious.
Now I must warn you, this recipe uses raw eggs so beware if you’re pregnant or have other health concerns (although, in our many years of drinking this, it has never caused issue with anyone in my family.)
The recipe calls for beating the egg whites and egg yolks separately. We usually put the egg whites in the bowl of a stand mixer, and the egg yolks in a large bowl and beat them with a hand beater. Otherwise just use the stand mixer and mix the egg yolks first, clean the bowl, then beat the egg whites.
You have the option of making this a boozy egg nog by adding some bourbon, but we usually serve it nonalcoholic to accommodate the children at our holiday celebrations. I prefer my booze in wine form. If you are hosting a party this holiday season, check out this post with an easy, but impressive-looking holiday charcuterie board.
Our Family’s Egg Nog Recipe
6 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 quart whole milk
1 pint half and half
1 pint heavy whipping cream
1 tsp vanilla
Nutmeg
Separate egg whites and egg yolks placing whites into the bowl of a stand mixer, and the yolks in a large bowl. Cream the egg yolks with the sugar for 1 minute using a hand mixer. Add milk, half and half, and heavy whipping cream. Beat until mixed thoroughly. Add vanilla, and mix again.
Next, beat egg whites separately until stiff peaks form. Place egg nog in a serving bowl, gently scoop egg whites on top of the egg nog, and sprinkle with nutmeg. Serve immediately.
