There is something so comforting about sipping a hot spiced beverage on a cold day. Mulled wine is usually served at Christmas markets across Europe. It is typically made with red wine and mulling spices, and served hot. Whether you’re abstaining from alcohol for health reasons or looking for a warm beverage you can serve to kids and adults alike, this recipe for non-alcoholic mulled wine will certainly give you those warm fuzzy feelings, too.
This recipe is perfect to serve for Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving, or any holiday event you have this season. You could even pack it in to-go mugs and take it with you on a holiday walk to look at Christmas lights!
In this recipe, pomegranate juice is substituted for the red wine, but you could also use grape juice or cranberry juice. I cut the sweetness with some coconut water (you could also use plain water) and added in some traditional mulling spices like cloves, cinnamon, star anise, and cardamom. This recipe tastes so much like the real thing; you may fool some people!
This recipe is really easy to put together – simply add all the ingredients to a pot and simmer gently for at least 15 minutes. The longer you simmer the ingredients, the more prominent the spice flavor will be. Note also that the longer you simmer, the more the mixture will evaporate. I simmered mine for about 45 minutes. Consider doubling the recipe if you plan to simmer for longer than an hour. You could also try making this in a crockpot set on low.
Non-Alcoholic Mulled Wine Recipe
Ingredients (serves 4)
4 cups pomegranate juice
4 cups coconut water
1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
8 whole cloves
4 cinnamon sticks
2 star anise
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cardamom
Directions:
Add all ingredients to a pot. Bring to a simmer and allow to gently boil for at least 15 minutes. The spice flavors will become more prominent the longer you allow the mixture to boil. When ready to drink, pour through a fine mesh sieve. Serve in mugs or heat-proof glasses and garnish with orange slices.
