I’ve been slowing building my winter wardrobe with some warmer pieces. I recently picked up this flannel from Madewell, and it’s so soft and cozy. I’m not normally one for plaid, or much pattern in general, but this green and black color combination really sold me. With everything new in my closet, I’m always thinking and brainstorming ways to style it with other pieces I already own. If something can’t be styled at least 4 ways, it’s not a keeper for me. This flannel passed the test! I wanted to share the outfits I made with you in this post – five ways to style a flannel.

For this particular top, it runs large in my opinion. I originally ordered my true size but had to return it for a size down. It has some length to it which makes it perfect for styling with leggings or tucking in to your denim. The quality is spot on, too. If green isn’t your color, a similar top is also available in a more neutral option here, as well as navy and buffalo check.

Five Ways To Style A Flannel

LOOK ONE: Flannel + Straight Denim + Loafers

The green and black pattern of this shirt goes perfectly with some black or washed black denim. I styled this look with my cognac loafers to add some warmer tones, but you can also swap for some boots for those colder days.

LOOK TWO: Flannel + Leggings + Sneakers

Flannel (size down one) // Leggings // Sneakers // Bag

This is a simple outfit that I know I’ll be wearing a ton this winter. I’ll probably add some crew socks to this look to keep my ankles warm. This black tote has become my almost daily bag. I like that it has one strap instead of two, which makes it easy to throw over my shoulder or wear as a crossbody bag.

LOOK THREE: Flannel Unbuttoned + Mom Jeans + Lug Sole Boots

For another option, style your flannel unbuttoned with a tank or tee, shacket style. Add a beanie and some lug sole boots for a cool, trendy look. This one is my favorite of the bunch.

LOOK FOUR: Flannel + Faux Leather Leggings + Lace Up Boots

A flannel and faux leather leggings go together so well. I’ll be honest, I don’t wear these leggings much because I bought them before the petite option was available, and they are pretty long on me. I need to get them hemmed so they fit better. Add some lace-up winter boots, and this makes for a stylish outfit.

LOOK FIVE: Flannel + White Denim + Cognac Booties

I didn’t include my white denim in my fall capsule, and oh, how I missed it. I’m definitely including this pair in my winter capsule. I’m really digging this color combination of olive green, white, and cognac. They no longer make this exact style of denim, but I linked the most similar option I found. All my jeans from Everlane tend to run long on me (even though I order the petite size) so I do my own raw hem on them. Just cuff the jeans where you want them to be, iron them, unfold, and cut along the crease. It’s not very precise, but it works!

There are five ways to style a flannel. I’m including this top in my winter capsule which I will be posting soon. If you’re looking for more ideas for cold weather outfits, check out these posts with four ways to style a shacket and five ways to style a sweater blazer.
