As we ease into the warmer months, there’s one style aesthetic I’ve been envisioning for spring and summer: the ‘90s mom. She’s simple, timeless, and effortless. She gravitates toward comfortable, oversized pieces paired with her favorite mom jeans – high-waisted and tapered at the ankle. She’s happiest barefoot in the garden, but when she does wear shoes, it’s something easy she can slip on, like white sneakers or slide sandals. She’s a little outdoorsy, a little preppy, and entirely laid-back.
For inspiration, I turned to Pinterest and some of my favorite ‘90s style icons – Princess Diana, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, and, of course, Friends.
Here are the pieces you’ll need to recreate the ‘90s mom aesthetic:
White Tee // Go for either a slim-fitting baby tee or a looser, relaxed version depending on your preference. Wear it on its own with mom jeans or layer it under an open button-down.
Oversized Button-Down // For this look, I recommend one in a soft denim blue (think light, drapey denim rather than structured) and one in classic white. Wear it tucked into jeans with the neckline slightly open for that effortless feel, or layer it open over a tee or tank.
Oversized Cotton Sweater // A perfectly slouchy sweater paired with mom jeans is peak ‘90s. I especially love this styled with a baseball cap and sneakers.
Oversized Graphic Sweatshirt // We can thank Princess Diana for making the graphic sweatshirt feel chic and effortless. Style it with loose denim or linen shorts.
Denim Shorts // Nothing says ‘90s quite like denim shorts. Look for a relaxed fit with a slightly longer length.
Linen Bottoms // Choose linen shorts or pants depending on your style. Pair them with button-downs, oversized sweaters, or keep it simple with a tank or tee in the summer.
Mom Jeans // You don’t need a pair labeled “mom jeans” to get the look – just opt for a high-waisted, straight-leg style. Bonus points if they’re a little cheeky and slightly tapered at the ankle.
Overalls // If you really love ‘90s style, consider adding a pair of overalls. Look for a loose fit and style them with a simple tee, blouse, or even a sweater tied around your waist.
White Sneakers // A clean, low-profile white sneaker is the ultimate “mom shoe” and works with just about everything here.
For accessories, the ’90s mom keeps it simple and easy – a baseball cap, a canvas bag that can get dirty, and a favorite pair of hand-me-down pearl earrings she wears everyday.
