I know many stay-at-home moms that struggle with their style. When I was a full-time SAHM with my kids, I definitely had an identity crisis. Personally, I need to feel put together to feel like myself and that can be a real challenge when you’re also caring for little humans with their sticky hands and sand covered toes. With this SAHM fall capsule wardrobe, I wanted to give you practical outfits that are comfortable and easy to move around in while also looking chic and polished. This 13 piece capsule wardrobe with accessories can be mixed and matched to create tons of outfits this fall. I have a variety of looks some that work for warmer fall days and some more layered looks for cooler days. I always like to have at least one layer with me whether that’s a jacket or a sweater. Read on to get some tips for dressing as a SAHM, a breakdown of this capsule wardrobe, and thirty outfit ideas.

Here are some tips that will make dressing as a SAHM much easier and help guide your purchases this fall:

  1. Stick to machine washable fabrics. As much as I love cashmere and silk, they are not practical at all. As a SAHM, your clothes take on a lot of stains (believe me, I know!) and often need to be washed after every wear (don’t worry this gets better as your kids get older!) If your clothes need the extra work of handwashing, you won’t wear them.
  2. Don’t underestimate your accessories. Keep your outfit simple, but add a few cool accessories. This is an easy way to make your outfit feel more thoughtful. Personally, I always notice a mom at the playground with a trendy pair of sunglasses. And don’t forget to add at least one piece of jewelry. Little things like this go a long way.
  3. Forgo anything that’s too tight. If something is too constricting or you’re constantly tugging at it to loosen it, you won’t wear it. Every piece in this capsule was chosen with comfort in mind.

Black & White Tee // These are the foundational pieces you need for your capsule wardrobe. They can be worn on their own with some cool accessories or layered under jackets and sweaters. I recommend both these ones (I size up 2 sizes!) and these ones (I go up one size.)

Cardigan // Cardigans are having a moment right now. I recommend a fitted cardigan sweater that buttons up the front. It can be worn on it’s own buttoned or unbuttoned or even over the shoulders. I chose gray which is a versatile neutral and goes with any bottoms you have, but choose a color you like. I do recommend sticking to cotton here; cashmere is too high maintenance. Here is a similar but more affordable option.

Denim Shirt // A denim shirt feels like the casual version of a button down. You can wear it buttoned or unbuttoned, too. Try adding a sweater over the shoulders for added dimension.

Oversized Sweater // An oversized cotton sweater is the comfy layer you need for fall. The one I’m linking here I own in the army green color. It has the perfect oversized fit. See it in motion in this reel (as well as the green pants I’ve linked below!)

Green Barrel Pants // I wanted to give you a couple comfortable nondenim pant options for this capsule. I know that constricting waistbands are not really conducive to the bending and moving SAHMs have to do daily. This green pair from the Gap (I own them) have a relaxed fit in the waist and are loose through the legs. If the barrel style isn’t for you, try this straight leg pair instead.

Elastic Waist Pants // Pants with a stretchy waistband are a must have option for SAHM. They are as comfortable as leggings (more so in my opinion!) without being athleisure. I own these pants in black and can confirm that they can easily be dressed up or down. They come in multiple color options, too. Stay true to size.

Straight Leg Jeans // Jeans can definitely be part of the SAHM wardrobe. Just choose a pair with a relaxed fit at the waist. I recently got this pair linked above, and they are so comfy for jeans! I also recommend this pair which is more budget-friendly and made with a stretch denim (see them here!)

Mary Jane Ballet Flats // I know the urge to wear sneakers is strong when you live the casual life, but I promise you, these are just as comfortable and much more chic (I own them!) They also come in tons of other options if you want to try some color. Stay true to size.

Sneakers // I think a pair of colorful sneakers is the perfect pair of shoes for the SAHM. Not only are they incredibly practical, but they also make a statement. I found this pair in a trendy red and burgundy colorway (immediately added to wishlist!)

Boat Shoes // Boat shoes are like the more casual cousin to a loafer – perfect for the SAHM. They kind of feel like elevated slippers. I own and recommend this pair from Madewell (I have it in the Dried Acorn color.) I also own and recommend this suede loafer from Reformation which are similar but a bit more sleek looking.

Barn Jacket // This canvas style work jacket is a nice casual cool outerwear option for the SAHM. I love it paired with Mary Janes for a more contrasting look, but it also works with sneakers and boat shoes for a more casual outfit. I own this one I’ve linked above and this one as well which is more lightweight and cropped.

Trench Coat // You may think a trench coat is too fancy for the SAHM, but trust me, it’s the perfect versatile layer that looks good with everything. I’ve linked one that is quite affordable, but I also love this one which is more of an investment.

Accessories // Like I mentioned above, don’t leave out the accessories! I’ve linked some mom-friendly options here including a hands-free sling bag (ASHLEYR15 for 15% off), a big tote bag when you need to carry snacks and water bottles, a cute pair of socks (yes, you can wear socks with all these shoes!), chic earrings, and some sunglasses for outdoor playtime.
