In this post, I’m sharing my fall essential bottoms, including two classic styles of jeans, trousers, plus skirts and dresses. This is the second post in my fall essentials series. Be sure to check out my fall essential tops here.
I’m a denim girlie so jeans are what I grab most, although once or twice per week, I try to change it up with a pair of trousers. If you have to dress up for work, you’ll want to have more pants options in your wardrobe. I’m sharing all my favorites and where to shop for them in this post.
Fall Essentials: Bottoms
Slim Straight Leg Denim
There are all sorts of styles of denim that are trending right now, but I’m sticking to the classics for this post. Starting with the slim straight leg denim. This is a style of denim that is fitted through the waist and thighs and has a straight leg through the calves and ankles. This style is usually somewhat cropped, meaning it should hit at about your ankle. This is probably the most versatile style of jean in my opinion as they look good with pretty much every style of shoe. It’s also a great style of denim if you like skinny jeans but want to try something a bit more modern. My two favorites in this style are the Madewell Perfect Vintage Jean (size down) and the Levi’s 501 Crop Denim. I also like the Everlane 90s Cheeky Jean as well which has a similar fit. The Agolde Riley Jean is another option that is currently on my denim wishlist! I like to pair this slimmer cut denim with my more blousy, loose fitting tops to keep the proportions right in my outfit.
Straight Leg Denim
A pair of straight leg denim will definitely stand the test of time. Parisian women having been wearing them for decades! I have three pairs in this style that are my favorites. First up is the Levi’s Ribcage Ankle Denim which is super high waisted and cropped. They are a 100% cotton rigid denim. Next up is the Everlane Way High Jean. These also have a super high waist but have a little more give since they are 99% cotton and 1% elastane. I also like the Madewell Perfect Vintage Wide Leg Jean which fits more like a straight leg. I always size down in Madewell denim. Lastly, the Sézane Le Crop Denim which has a slight flare at the bottom. This denim runs small; size up. I like to pair this style of denim with my slim fitting tops to keep proportions balanced.
Trousers
Trousers have been HUGE for the last few years, and I don’t see that going anywhere. I know that those of you who wear business casual have pretty much been wearing these the whole time, but now, they are being styled more casually. This works well for me because I’m living that casual life over here, and I like having another option besides jeans. There are so many styles available right now. For a really comfortable, yet classic pair try the Everlane Dream Pant. I also own the Everlane Way High Drape Pant and the Madewell Harlow Pant which fit pretty similar and have a wide leg. These Madewell Pleated Tapered Leg Pants have a cool barrel shaped leg and are so comfortable. I recommend sizing down in both Madewell pants. Quince has a few affordable options including this cropped straight leg pair (size up.) I also love the Mary Easy Pants from ABLE as the have an elastic waist and are so easy breezy. I own them in both colorways. Use code ASHLER15 for 15% off.
Skirts & Dresses
I’m a casual denim girl so that’s what you’ll find me in most days, but skirts and dresses are another option if you prefer a more feminine style. Personally, I don’t own many of these, but I do think a classic slip skirt and slip dress are nice to have in your wardrobe for dressier occasions. I own this skirt from J.Crew and this slip dress from Madewell which runs small. I also am shopping around for a knit dress to add to my fall wardrobe, and I’m linking a few ones I’m eyeing below.
Many of these items are included in my 2023 fall capsule wardrobe. See my Daily Looks page for how I’m styling these pieces for everyday.
