Reading is an essential part of my bedtime routine. Some nights I read for 15 minutes and sometimes I read for an hour, but I almost always read every night. In this post, I’m sharing eleven books I’ve read this year. I have a mix of nonfiction self-help books, historical fiction, romance, and drama. I hope you find a few to add to your reading list this year! For more book recommendations, check out this post with everything I read in 2022 and this post with five more favorites.
Eleven Books I’ve Read This Year

A Visit From The Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan
This book was full of well developed and interesting characters (none of which I particularly liked all that much) but it was a good read and kept me interested the entire time. It’s hard to explain the plot but there are several intersecting (and sometimes tragic) stories that revolve around one music industry executive.

Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? by Dr. Julie Smith
This is one of those books that is chock-full of good advice and needs to be read slowly over time. Unfortunately, I read this one a little too quickly (I had to return it to the library!), and I’m honestly having trouble retaining all that useful advice. The author is a therapist and shares some tools for navigating the difficult situations in life.

The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles
This is an epic novel which instantly felt like a classic and one of those books you might read (and remember!) from high school. It is LONG so settle in and enjoy it. It follows the journey of a young man and his little brother as they leave their home in Nebraska in search of a better life.

The Hero of This Book by Elizabeth McCracken
I added this book to my reading list after seeing it on a few awards lists. The plot honestly was a little boring for my tastes; however, the writing was unique, and and I ended up finishing this short novel in a few days time. It is written in the first person in a memoir style as she explores her complicated relationship with her mother who recently passed.

This romantic comedy is full of wit and subtle humor. The romance between these two book industry experts proceeds in the typical rom-com fashion with initial dislike leading to lust, friendship, and eventually love. I liked this one a lot and even bought her latest book, Happy Place, to read on an upcoming vacation.

In my desire to lower my stress levels and simplify my life this year, I picked up this book which comes highly recommended. It delves into the idea of choosing your top priorities in life and pursing those rather than attempting to have it all. I thought it was really helpful!

I love a good murder mystery and this one definitely pulled me in! I honestly had no idea whodunnit till the end. The setting of the novel, on a remote and stormy island, really adds to the plot.

The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley
This is my most recent read, and while I didn’t enjoy it as much as The Guest List, I thought it was another good read by the same author. The storyline begins with the mysterious disappearance of one character and continues with his sister’s search to find out what happened to him.

All The Broken Places by John Boyne
This book falls into my favorite genre, historical fiction. It takes place in two different time periods but revolves around the life of Gretel from the time she was a young girl living in Germany with her family on a concentration camp (her father was a commandant there) to her life now in a luxury flat in London. I really enjoyed this one!

Lessons In Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
I LOVED this book, and I think it might be my favorite on this list. It has a strong female protagonist who is a scientist. It follows her life as she navigates being a female in what was, at that time, thought of as a man’s domain. I definitely recommend adding this to your reading list.

Raising Good Humans by Hunter Clarke-Fields
If you’re a parent, I highly recommend reading this book. It is helpful for children of any age, but especially for those of young children. The author gives tons of practical advice about parenting and building a trusting relationship with your children. I liked it so much, I purchased it after checking it out from the library. I plan to review it every so often.
