I’ve been a long-time Prose customer, and it’s high time I did a complete review. In this post, I’m sharing my thoughts and opinions on Prose products. I began using Prose haircare products after seeing rave reviews on social media. Since then, I’ve also tried the brand’s recently launched skincare line, and in this post, I’m reviewing both product lines.
Prose Review
About Prose
Prose is a hair and skincare brand that specializes in customized formulas based on your unique hair and skin needs. When you head to their website, you’ll take their consultation which asks questions about your hair or skin type, your age, where you live, your diet and lifestyle, and any hair or skin issues you may have. Then Prose will build a custom formula with a suggested regimen based on your answers.
Once your customized formula is generated, you can select which products you’d like to receive. Those products are then shipped to you on a regular schedule if you select to subscribe (subscribing gets you a discount.) The products are bottled in Prose’s factory in Brooklyn shortly before shipping.
Each ingredient included in your formula is chosen based on safety and effectiveness. Here you’ll find a complete list of ingredients Prose uses in their hair and skincare products along with where it’s sourced from (all ingredients are sourced ethically) and what it’s used for. In addition, you’ll see the ingredient’s score from the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit organization that measures the safety of ingredients based on research. Prose uses both natural and synthetic ingredients which are reviewed by their in-house research and development team. All products are free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oils, and GMOs. The brand is also cruelty free and has both B Corp and Climate Neutral certifications.
Prose Haircare Review
As I’ve mentioned, I’ve been using Prose haircare products for over two years. My regular order includes my customized shampoo, conditioner, and curl cream. I also have a container of the customized hair mask which I received as a complimentary gift after I purchased 10 products.
After taking my initial consultation, the results indicated that my biggest issues were dryness and damage (years of using hot tools to style my hair may have something to do with that) and my formula was customized with ingredients to support these issues.
The ingredients in my custom formula include pea protein for hair vitality, linseed extract and fermented rice water to tame frizz, apple cider vinegar to boost shine, argan and shea oils to nourish hair, and oat lipid and sunflower seed extract to prevent color fade. My suggested regimen included shampoo, conditioner, curl cream, a hair mask, and hair growth supplements, but I only selected to receive the shampoo, conditioner and curl cream.
At this point, you also select the fragrance you prefer. You can choose from a variety of scents from fruity to fresh and floral. There is also the option to select fragrance free if you have sensitive skin.
Prior to using Prose, I had pretty significant hair damage from years of straighteners and curling irons. I should also note that I started using Prose right around the time I decided to start wearing my hair naturally wavy instead of heat styling it. My results after using Prose were amazing. After a few months of use, my damaged and dry hair started to get more shiny and had significantly less frizz. In full disclosure, this was probably a combination of forgoing hot tools and using Prose customized products. I often get compliments on my hair now (it’s one of the most common questions I get here at Stitch & Salt), and my hair feels so much more healthy.
As for the products themselves, I love that the shampoo gets nice and sudsy which makes my scalp and hair feel super clean. The conditioner is thick and rich and makes my hair so soft. I also like the curl cream as it’s lightweight and doesn’t make my hair crunchy. They also offer additional products for hair including leave-in conditioner, a scalp mask, styling gel, hair oil, and even brushes and hair towels.
I plan to keep using Prose haircare for the foreseeable future. I’m also considering adding in the hair supplements as I’ve experienced some significant hair shedding due to some health issues I’ve been having. You can always log in and change your formula if you have a significant life change, like when we moved from Kansas City to Seattle.
Prose Skincare Review
Although I purchase Prose haircare, I was offered a month’s worth of skincare as a gift from the brand. However, as always, this review is my 100% honest opinion.
I went through a similar process as above for my customized skincare formula. The consultation included lifestyle questions like age, sun exposure, stress levels, sleep, diet and water intake, and also skin specific questions like skin type, skin issues and sensitivity, and skin goals. Based on the answers to these questions, my skin needed the most support in the areas of hyperpigmentation, dryness, stressors, and my skin barrier.
My customized formula included, among other ingredients, mushroom extract to soften fine lines, red algae extract to minimize redness, and hyaluronic acid to improve skin elasticity.
Skincare is a newer product line for Prose and includes only three products: cleanser, serum, and moisturizer. You can see below the jars include my skin goals and the key ingredients included in my custom formula.
I thought each product in the line worked really well for my skin. The cleanser was creamy and didn’t strip my skin like some cleansers do. The serum brightened and hydrated my skin, and the moisturizer was rich and nourishing.
My only complaint in regards to the skincare line is that I prefer retinol for my aging skin and this serum contains bakuchiol, a more gentle alternative to retinol. For that reason, I did use retinol in addition to these three products.
I really enjoyed the simplicity of this routine, and I definitely thought the products were effective in terms of skin radiance and hydration. I like that the subscription just shows up at your doorstep at regular intervals so you don’t have to worry about reordering. I can see how this would simplify your routine.
Overall Impressions
If you looking for clean hair and skincare products that deliver results, I highly recommend Prose. The products have done wonders for my dry and damaged hair, and the skincare line is very effective as well.
Some things to consider are price and the subscription process. If you’re on a budget, these products are a bit more pricey compared to drugstore variety hair and skincare products (a bottle of shampoo costs $34 without the subscription discount.) I also think the subscription process can be good and bad. Good because the products show up at your doorstep and you never run out. Bad because you may not need a refill when it arrives, or you get too much of one product (I use way more conditioner than shampoo.) You do have to manage this occasionally on your account by removing or adding a product to your next shipment.
However, I absolutely recommend Prose. I have even converted my mom and sister to Prose haircare products.
