It’s that time of year where basically everyone I talk to is in an outfit rut. We’ve worn through our summer clothes, and we are over it. I usually start trending towards super basic outfits like a tank and shorts on repeat once August rolls around. Sometimes, I just can’t be bothered. I think that is totally fine, but if you are wanting some more interesting looks to bring life back into your August, I’ve got some ideas for you. This post is meant to stir your creative style juices by giving you a starter outfit plus some variations to play around with. I’ve mostly used basic (but not boring) pieces in these looks in hopes that your closet is already stocked with something similar or it’s a piece that will transition into early fall. I like to get good wear out of my clothing! Use these looks as inspiration to reinvigorate your summer style.
A Week’s Worth Of Summer Outfits

This look is my coastal chic, want to feel like I’m in a Nancy Meyer’s film, but also live somewhere where it’s super hot and there is not ocean breeze to cool me off. It’s a striped button down (stripes = chic), linen shorts (I love the longer length on these, but wear what you have), some suede sandals, and a basket bag.
Variations:
Swap the striped shirt for a solid color shirt.
Swap the sandals for loafers for a more fall inspired look.
If you don’t like shorts, try linen pants instead.
Wear the shirt unbuttoned with a tank underneath.

The thing I love about this look is that all these pieces could easily transition into the cooler months by pairing with warmer pieces. This look feels cool and modern but also extremely mom friendly as well.
Variations:
Any plain tee shirt works here; just add some accessories to elevate it.
If mesh flats aren’t your thing, swap for a ballet flat or Mary Jane.
Swap the black denim for blue or white denim.
Try a black skirt instead of black denim shorts (mini, poplin maxi, or slip skirt all work here!)

A white poplin maxi skirt will actually transition really well into fall (I’ve got a whole post to prove it!) For summer though, this is the way I wear it most. A basic tank, barely there sandals, and some summery accessories.
Variations:
This would look equally cute with a black maxi skirt and white tank.
Swap the simple tank for something more elevated like a vest top.
For a more casual look, pair this skirt with a tee instead of tank and maybe some low profile sneakers.

A linen shift dress is a chic one and done look when you just can’t be bothered. Choose your own adventure when it comes to your accessories. I like pairing mine with a little scarf either tied around my neck or on my bag.
Variations:
Try tying a light button down or long sleeved tee around your waist to add dimension.
Try swapping the flip flops for a ballet flat or loafer for a more contrasting look (wrong shoe theory vibes!)
For a more preppy look, tie a light sweater around your shoulders and wear a low profile sneaker instead.

I’m kind of kicking myself for not buying some gingham pants earlier in the summer; however, these will transition nicely into the fall. Just pair them with a tee and your favorite outerwear. For summer, I’ve paired them with a cute little eyelet blouse, sandals, and some statement earrings.
Variations:
If you don’t own any printed pants, swap for a pair of lightweight trousers in linen or crepe.
For a more casual, everyday look, switch out the blouse for a simple tee or tank.
Transition this look into early fall with a sweater and loafers.

I’ve worn a few variations of this outfit on repeat all summer (nothing wrong with repeating your favorite outfits, too!)
Variations:
Any knit top would work here; try a knit tank or even a light sweater if the weather allows.
Swap the knit top for a plain tee or tank and add a light sweater over your shoulders or tied at the waist.
If you don’t own boxer shorts, any pull-on short will give the same vibe.
Swap the flats for sneakers for a more casual look.

This colorful tee and cotton pants look is simple but gets the job done. I have worn something similar with my red tee as well.
Variations:
Green is one of my colors, but you could wear any color tee you have.
Add a sweater over the shoulders or tied at the waist for dimension.
If pants are a nonstarter in your climate, swap for a tailored short.
