I reach for my linen pieces on a daily basis in the summertime. I’m wearing my linen shorts for everyday outfits that keep me cool in the heat. I’m throwing on my linen button down over my swimsuit to hit the pool with my kids. I’m pairing my cute linen tanks with tailored shorts for dinners out with Danny. Linen is light and breathable, and, along with cotton, is my fabric of choice for the warm months. In this post, I’m giving you ideas for how to style your linen pieces this summer. All the outfits featured here are from the brand Everlane. Their linen is good quality, ethically made, and not scratchy in the slightest. To summarize, it’s my favorite.

Three Ways To Style Linen
Linen Button Down With A Basic Tank & Denim Shorts

I should do an entire post with my favorite button downs, but for the summertime, it’s between these linen ones from Everlane and these cotton poplin ones from Gap. One strategy I use for summer dressing where inside temperatures can vary significantly from outside temperatures is to have a button down with me at all times. If I’m inside with the AC, I throw it on unbuttoned as a light jacket and when I go back outside, I’ll tie it around my waist. Either way, you’ve got your ‘third piece’ for extra interest.

Here, I’m wearing my linen button down really simply (all of these looks are super simple; just the way I like it) with a pair of denim shorts and a ribbed tank. I do want to call out these denim shorts because they are by far my closet favorites, and I own them in 3 colors. They have a high waist and wide cut legs that aren’t too tight. You could swap denim shorts for a pair of tailored shorts for a slightly more dressy look.

Linen Pants With A Basic Tank

This is one of my go-to minimalist summer outfits – a basic tank, wide leg linen pants, and barely there sandals. It’s easy and comfortable, and it looks put together without me having to think much about it. I like that these pants have a zipper and clasp closure which makes them look a bit more polished than a drawstring pant.

These tanks are also really good quality, and, although they are on the thinner side, they look good on their own as well as layered under other pieces.

Linen Button Down With Casual Shorts

This combination of a button down and casual shorts is a new style for me, but I’ve been very into it lately (see this boxer shorts post as evidence.) I love the contrast of a traditionally dressy piece like a button down paired with a super casual short like this. Plus, I can’t think of a more comfortable outfit for the summer months. This is the same linen top as the first outfit but in black. They fit true to size, but you could consider sizing up for a more oversized fit. These barrel shorts are made from a technical fabric and are kind of like a track short. I can (and have) worn them for more sporty activities like hiking and gardening, but I wear them mostly like this.

Also note that how you style your button down can make a huge difference in how it looks. I like to roll my sleeves and unbutton a few buttons on the bottom if I’m wearing it open. I also like to make sure the neckline is open a bit either by just pulling on the collar or using fashion tape.
