Spring 2026 Style Trends: What I’d Consider Purchasing For My Capsule Wardrobe

Maintaining a capsule wardrobe doesn’t mean you can never participate in trends – it’s about choosing the ones that actually work for your lifestyle and climate, and making sure they’re pieces you’ll still reach for when they’re no longer at the height of fashion. In this post, I’m sharing the Spring 2026 style trends I’m considering for my capsule wardrobes. For me, they have to be items I can style multiple ways, because a capsule wardrobe means most things (not necessarily everything) need to earn their keep through versatility.

It’s also worth noting that trends don’t have to be specific pieces – although that’s how I’ve structured this post. Trends can just as easily be how something is styled. A major one right now is creating outfits with a bit of tension – pairing pieces that don’t traditionally “go together.” Think casual, light-wash denim with an elevated blazer, or sneakers with tailored trousers. You probably already own these pieces, but maybe you haven’t worn them together in that way.

Trends can also show up as silhouettes (oversized, slim), broader themes (cottagecore, coastal grandmother, etc.), or even colors. That said, I’m personally not big on color trends that fall outside my usual palette as those items rarely last in my closet.

The Spring 2026 trends I’m sharing here aren’t “wear once for a season and move on” purchases. They’re the kind of updates that should last several seasons and ideally several years. They may not stay at the top of the trend cycle the whole time, but when they’re styled in a modern way, they’ll still feel timeless long after their peak moment.

Sheer tops are probably more of an evening piece, but depending on your workplace, you can make them feel daytime-appropriate with a cami layered underneath. I love this trend because it feels sexy without being overly revealing. Sheer tops also run the gamut in coverage, so you can choose one that matches your comfort level. And if you want even more ease (or warmth), layering a sheer top under a blazer is one of my favorite ways to wear it.

I’ve labeled this a utility jacket, but you may also see this trend described as windbreakers or funnel-neck jackets – both are really just variations on the same utility vibe. It’s part of the elevated sportswear wave that’s everywhere this year. Utility jackets themselves aren’t new, but the way they’re being styled feels fresh – paired with tailored bottoms like trousers and finished with shoes that aren’t sneakers.

And it doesn’t have to be a true funnel neck, either – pop the collar on a more classic utility style for a similar effect. I’m especially eyeing that brown jacket from Quince.

Talk about classic style – brooches feel like something our grandmothers would wear, and I love how nostalgic it is to see them coming back. I’ve been spotting them most often pinned onto a blazer or jacket, or used to create shape in a boxy sweater (an easy styling trick that instantly makes an outfit feel more intentional). I did a quick search on Etsy and found so many great vintage options, but I’ve also linked a few new ones from retailers if you prefer something brand-new.

Mesh (or sheer) flats really hit the scene after their debut at The Row a few years back, and every spring/summer since, some new variation pops up across retailers. At this point, I don’t see this trend going anywhere for a long time.

I also think they’re incredibly flattering – especially if you have shorter legs like I do – because they show a bit of toe and don’t break up the leg line the way a more opaque flat can. They’re surprisingly versatile, too: easy to style with everything from baggy denim to cropped trousers. I own the Steve Madden pair (they were gifted to me) and I love the edge they add to my outfits.

Blazers may be a classic capsule wardrobe piece, but the “it” silhouette tends to shift every few years. For a while, the oversized blazer was everywhere (sometimes very oversized, yeesh), but lately I’ve been seeing a move toward cinched styles that nip in at the waist. Some versions also have a cutaway detail that opens slightly at the bottom, which adds shape without feeling fussy.

I actually prefer this direction – it highlights the waist and doesn’t make my legs look shorter (always a struggle for me). You’ll see variations that button all the way up to the neck, as well as more traditional V-neck blazer shapes. Either way, this look is so chic. And if you don’t want to buy anything new, you can get a similar effect by belting a regular blazer at the waist.

Texture has been a major style thread for the past few years – mixing materials like suede and leather, and now leaning into lace and satin as another option. What I like about this trend is how flexible it is: you can dress it up, but honestly it feels even more modern when it’s styled casually.

This is also one area where I wouldn’t try to cut corners – cheap lace, especially, can read cheap. Personally, I’m eyeing those lace shorts from Reformation, which I’d style with sweaters in spring and oversized tees in summer for that high-low balance.
