Now that Thanksgiving is over, there’s no more holding back on the holiday content. I have a few more holiday centered posts in the works, and I’m so excited to just bask in the festive merriment that takes over this time of year. For all you Kansas City locals, I’m sharing our favorite holiday activities in Kansas City. This is by far not an exhaustive list of every activity available in KC, just a small collection of our favorites. Happy Holidays!
Our Favorite Holiday Activities In Kansas City
- Christmas in the Park at Longview Lake // We love this Christmas lights display which is organized by Jackson County Parks and Recreation. We started going four years ago after we had kids, and I’m always super impressed with the setup. The kids look out in awe as we wind our way through the lights. We usually grab some hot chocolate from Starbucks for the drive there as a special treat. Just know that you will most likely have to wait an line for at least in hour. I suggest going on a weekday to reduce your wait time.
- Holiday Model Train Gallery at Union Station // Every year we make our way down to Union Station for all the fun activities they have there, including our favorite model train exhibit. They decorate their model train display with Christmas trees and snow and it’s the cutest thing ever. The kids love it!
- A Christmas Carol at the Kansas City Repertory Theater // We have been going to see A Christmas Carol at the Kansas City Repertory Theater for over 10 years. We leave the kids at home for this one and usually make it a siblings night out with my brother and sister and their significant others with dinner and drinks beforehand.
- Holiday Lights at Farmstead Lane // The Deanna Rose Farmstead in Overland Park is a favorite warm weather destination for us, and at Christmas time they have a fabulous Christmas lights show that you can view from the parking lot. The show is about 40 minutes long and repeats itself with themed songs including Star Wars and Frozen.
- Winter Magic // This drive through lights show at Swope Park began last year, and it’s really cute. They have music playing in sync with the lights displays which makes it really fun.
- The Kansas City Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker // This is such a classic, and I’ve been several times in my lifetime. I can’t wait to start bringing my kids, but this year they require proof of vaccination for all attendees. I will for sure be taking my kids next year though!
- Santa’s Gingerbread Station at Crown Center // This is a free exhibit at Crown Center that takes place every year. Your kids can also see Santa there, although, to be honest, we usually don’t want to wait in line. We usually make an afternoon of it by grabbing lunch at Crown Center beforehand.
