I’m back with another post in everybody’s favorite series: how to dress like your favorite movie characters. In these posts, I take a character from a beloved film and recreate their looks. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of this post to see other characters from this series! For this one, I’m recreating the outfits of Julia Roberts’ character in Stepmom, Isabel Kelly.
Stepmom is one of those movies I like to rewatch in the fall. If you haven’t seen it, here’s a quick intro. The film centers around the relationship between two women, Jackie, the ex-wife, and Isabel, the new girlfriend, as they both struggle to coparent Jackie and her ex-husband Lukes’ kids through a new family dynamic. Jackie is skeptical of Isabel and her naiveté about children while Isabel struggles to form a bond with the kids. There is more to the story, but I’ll let you watch it yourself. And be sure to have some tissues handy. I was literally sobbing during my rewatch.
This post is about style; however, and Julia Roberts’ character in the film is pure ‘90s with modern, sleek silhouettes and tons of black. Truth be told, I think I identify more with Susan Sarandon’s character style wise which is more classic and preppy, but that’s a post for another day!
I recreated eight of Isabel’s looks from the film. I hope you enjoy reading this post!

This is the first scene in the movie where Isabel is frantically trying to get the kids ready for school (#relatable). She’s wearing a gray tee, white boxer shorts, and plaid robe, and apparently, she just woke up like this, perfect bangs and all.

This is what I imagine a photographer in the ‘90s would wear - a slim white button down, black pants, and platform sneakers.

This look is all about the textures - the silk top, the leather pants, the flowy blazer. I’m not sure if anyone pulls off leather pants better than Julia Roberts in this movie.

A casual look but actually one of my favorites from the movie. She’s wearing a simple taupe thermal tee with a waffle stitch and white pajama pants. I’ve linked a couple options for each piece below if you’d like to recreate this look.
Shop The Look

This is an iconic look from the film with a black jumpsuit and red bandana. I linked a couple jumpsuit options below, but my favorite utility jumpsuit is from the brand Alex Mill. They don’t sell it anymore though; I recommend checking out a resale site like Poshmark where you’ll find tons of options.

Rewatching all these ‘90s movies makes me want to wear skirts more, especially with a pair of sheer tights. I love how the coat falls past the skirt here; I don’t think this would look quite as good if the coat were shorter. Also note the pigtail braids!

This look is one I’ll definitely be recreating this fall and winter - a chunky turtleneck sweater, black wool coat, and jeans. I’m not sure what shoes she is wearing, but I think a practical boot like this works nicely.

Here’s an all black look broken up with a green scarf. The whole look is a black sweater, black leather jacket, and black pants. I think her actual scarf here is velvet, not something you’d find these days. I swapped it for a cashmere one.
